I know I left the forums, but I just couldn't resist a good argument.
Firstly, it's PETITION.
Second, The Scratch Team closes political topics because people have strong opinions about it and it can easily lead to flames and stuff.
Third, Spleling is improtant!

Spelling certainly is important and in no way do I support political topics being allowed on the forums

Nope, sorry. Political topics tend to degenerate into flame wars, and it's just not good for the Scratch community.
As for the free speech argument? You're right - the first amendment of the Constitution gives us the right to freedom of expression, but the Scratch forums are a private message board and as such, the Scratch Team has the right to moderate them and set rules for them. Even hate speech is protected under the first amendment, but you don't see anyone complaining about that being censored on the forums, do you? Also remember that although this site is based in America and many of its users are American, it's an international site and not all countries have the same rules.

What if there are still flame wars?
Even if they aren't allowed, it will be unavoidable.

Religious threads first.

I like that idea. Discuss who we want, and why... I don't think there will be a flame war.

Politics always ends up nasty... Believe me... I know everything!

NO
That would be waaay worse. Most people on here (honestly speaking, when it was allowed) could only argue with unsupportable "I'm right UR WRONG" statements that were emotionally charged.
That exists to some degree in topics relating to politics, but little kids tend to avoid those discussions more.

I sign the petition btw.

There are valid arguments for both of them.
FOR POLITICAL TOPICS:
-most forumers are mature enough to handle this
-freedom of speech
-it can't get THAT out of hand
AGAINST POLITICAL TOPICS:
-not everyone is mature enough
-could turn into a flamewar
-destroy friendships.
I will remain neutral, but I respect both sides and their opinions.

Yeah, that makes sense, but Canadian and American elections almost never coincide, so... inconvienience.
I say no, as some people have very strong opinions, and some might dissagree...
Flame war waiting to happen.

Yeah, as jji7skyline said, not really fair to non-Americans unless you allow topic at every other election in the world, which would be extremely inconvienient, amirite?
