"Windows" "8"

I think it is too different. It isn't "Windows" anymore.  hmm

I like the tiles idea, and I also like the ChromeOS approach merging the internet browser with the OS, so I'll be uploading my own mockup of how I think Windows 8 should work later.  tongue

I like windows, but I don't like that, It's far to orintated towards touchscreen. I'm still using an XP computer and I like my icons.

You're right. It IS based on Windows Phone OS. And that's why I hate it. It looks like Windows Phone 8, not Windows 8. There is no way I'm going to upgrade to this for PC use. It is obviously meant for a touchscreen, not a laptop or desktop.

Come on. Think about it. Microsoft will never do that. Maybe this is a video of a new application that comes with windows.  roll

Re: "Windows" "8"

I like it in some ways, but not in other ways. I think it's very promising, but have a lot of concerns. Mostly I'm worried that it's too oriented towards casual users and doesn't focus on power users as much.

What I like:
1. It's going to be the same, unified OS for both tablets and desktops.
2. Optimized for both touch and mouse/keyboard.
3. Live tiles will display information in real time.
4. More integrated with the cloud and other online services.
5. Can easily put windows up next to each other and adjust each one's size.

What I dislike/am concerned about:
1. I know that there will be legacy application support, but I'm not exactly sure how well it will integrate.
2. Live tiles will act like widgets in some ways, but what about dedicated widgets, like my cpu and network monitors, that don't have any applications they open into? Where will they go?
3. No start menu. I prefer the start menu to access most things, and to keep my desktop very clean. I feel like a bunch of tiles a la WP7 is taking a step backwards in terms of organization. I don't want to have to swipe through 5 pages of applications to find the one I want; I want to kit the start key, type a few letters and select it from a list like I do now.
4. How will multitasking work without the taskbar? Swiping from app to app works fine if only a few are open, but what if you have a lot? I don't want to swipe through 10 apps to find the one I want.

Re: "Windows" "8"

Ubuntu, Gnome 3, Mac OS X Lion, Windows 8 and Elementary are all going to a tablet style interface. Why can't they see that people with a 24 inch monitor don't want an iPad? If they wanted a tablet, they would have bought one instead of a computer.

It sucks. I literally hate everything about it. It's just so... ugly. And they're forcing you to use Internet Explorer!

I will ALWAYS use Windows XP with Chrome.

Yawn, another boring text signature. I should really make something better.

yeah. for what it is it's great, but I prefer a standard desktop experience. this is more suited to a tablet, not a desktop.

EDIT: Rather than buying this [word not appropriate for forums], I'll just buy a computer (no OS) and dual boot every linux distro and opensolaris.

Re: "Windows" "8"

AARRRGGHH (and please don't report this saying its spam) windows forgot their 'windows'! How many times do we have to tell you silicon valley people! Touch screen and touch pads will never replace the mouse!!!

Really it never will... have you ever tried doing anything on a touchscreen? HP all-in-ones are the worst computers in the world!  Oh well... I'll have to switch to linux or mac when windows destroy their OS...  sad

You'll be able to use any browser you want, just like Windows now. What gave you that idea? Personally, I like the look of this, at least more than Windows XP. To be honest, XP is rather ugly.

This was another one of my concerns. This will be great on a 7-10 inch screen, but it's not really making the best use of a 20-25 inch screen.

Re: "Windows" "8"

I saw it... it's just Windows Mobile brought to the computer. Here are some advantages and disadvantages of this thing:

ADVANTAGES- It's no longer a PC now, but rather, a "multitude" of things brought to your fingertips- basically convenience and quasi-innovation (quasi- because it's Apple thought of this a LONG time ago)

DISADVANTAGES:

They're just copying Apple, and I think Microsoft also intends to create tablets and touchscreen devices instead of normal computers... But then there is no more originality! The "good old" taskbar, Start Menu, and icons were original. People eventually started copying them, but Microsoft always came first. However, this time they're trying to copy Apple's iOS, and then the "alive" originality is now dead- it is now a concept that was already thought by someone before, and then the new Windows is just copying it, and bringing it out. How disappointing! I thought Microsoft was capable of MORE.

@16skittles: You're right, it should be "Windows" 8, not Windows "8." But it's true that  it's only the 8th version Windows NT-based OSs, not the 8th Windows OS, so the title should be more like "Windows" 8/Windows "8."

I believe Windows 8 is just a working name, and they're going to call it something else when they actually release.

But how is this anything like iOS? Because it uses a minimalist interface with mostly full screen apps?  If anything, it's closer to a version of WP7 optimized for larger screens and a more powerful desktop environment. Nothing like this has been done with a desktop OS before, so I'd say MS is taking a huge risk and really doing something new here.
