Camera Review

I will be reviewing cameras on this thread…

Nikon Coolpix P100

The primary features of the P100 were: The 10fps full resolution burst speed, the 26x zoom starting at a nice wide end of 26mm and ending up at more than 600mm, the Full HD video recording with stereo sound, and the full manual controls.

10fps burst speed
The P100 has 2 burst modes, the Continuous H and Continuous L. The Continuous H can do 10fps in prime conditions and last for just over half a second. The Continuous L will do almos 3fps in prime conditions and last pretty long even at full res. This is a handy little tool but is weighed down by a slow buffer, pretty fast for a compact but not nearly enough for a prosumer camera like this one.

FPS RATING * * * *

26x zoom
The Nikon P100 was built around its zoom lens. The 26mm is great compared to its rival SX30IS’s 28mm. The Telephoto end was ok but there was quite a bit of purple fringing. This degraded image quality a lot. There are 2 zoom speeds. Twist the zoom ring which goes round the shutter button lightly and it goes slowly but yank it round hard and it will go from wide end to telephoto in less than 2 sec! To counter camera shake especially at long focal lengths Nikon has fitted a fantastic Sensor Shift Vibration Reduction system which counter nicely but not nearly enough at slow shutter speeds.

ZOOM RATING * * * *

FULL HD VIDEO
This was an amazing feature on a prosumer camera. The 1080p video recording is great and comes with electronic vibration reduction and wind shield. It combines with the stereo microphone on the camera to create epic videos, however, the overall quality isn’t  as good as you might expect and the sound of the zoom motor operating may come out in the video if you zoom during the video.

VIDEO RATING * * *

Everything Else
The Nikon P100 comes with a mode dial which has a few functions including SCENE mode and AUTO SCENE MODE. The big features however are the P, S, A, M and U modes.

In Programmed (P) mode the camera is in auto but turn the control ring and you get different options for exposure. Also you can change ISO, WB and other options at will which you cannot in the Full Auto and Scene modes. I

n the Shutter Priority (S) you can easily control the shutter speed from 8” to 1/2000. Then the camera chooses aperture to compensate. The camera warns you when the shutter speed is too fast or slow to be compensated by changing aperture. You can change different options such as ISO and WB as you can in P mode. In Aperture priority (A) you define the aperture and the camera does the rest. Of course you can control other options such as ISO and WB as you can in the other manual modes. In full Manual mode (M) you define all values such as shutter speed and aperture but ISO can be set to Auto if you wish. U is user setting mode where you can save settings from M, P, S, and A modes.

Auto focus is amazingly fast compared to compacts but slow compared to DSLRs. It is pretty fast and the Macro 0.5cm from the lens is amazing for close-up photography.

MANUAL MODES * * * * *

Downfalls
The P100 falls flat on its face when the ISO is raised above 400 and noise can be seen even at 400. The 10 Megapixels can sometimes seem a bit too low and the viewfinder can often be uncomfortable compared to those on DSLRs. The Aperture goes as large as f/2.8 which is great but only comes down to f/8.0 which means it is impossible to do long exposures when there is a bit of light. Also the Nikon P100 does not have a hot-shoe or an audio input or thread for attaching filters. The Nikon P100 makes up for this with other features but the downfalls listed here are downfalls for almost all prosumer cameras below $800 (AUD) and especially on Super-zooms.

OVERALL * * * *
Pros: High burst rate, long zoom, good wide angle, articulating, large and high resolution screen,  full manual controls and 1080p video.

Cons: Aperture only comes down to f/8, photo quality downgrades above 400 ISO and uncomfortable viewfinder.

P.S. I bought this camera and reviewed it properly by testing it out over a period of time in all conditions from snowing temperatures to temperatures that make you sweat just by thinking about it, from the wettest country on earth (UK) to the country with the best weather in the world (AUS). From sea level to almost 4000m above sea level (while on land not on a plane). From the Southern hemisphere to the Northern Hemisphere. Pretty much anything this camera will ever have to handle in its life.

Optional information: this camera was tested using a 8GB Class 4 SD card with a max. transfer rate of 20MB/sec

There is a difference between the sensor resolution (the pictures) and the video resolution.

For example, I have a regular run of the mill camera, the Kodak Easyshare M340. It can take 10.2 Megapixel pictures (3664 x 2748) pictures, but only VGA video (640x480).

My camcorder on the other hand, a Sony Handycam CX-150, can take HD video, but only 3.1 Megapixel pictures.

Full HD video is 1920x1080 which is about 2-3 Megapixels however most still cameras can take photos more than 8 Megapixels. This is because to shoot a video you have to take 24to30 frames in a second which is almost impossible at high res. At low res it is more possible...  smile

Exactly. A higher pixel count doesn't really mean better video.

Oh, and one more thing for comparison: the iTouch camera can shoot 720p video, but is only 0.7 Megapixels.

This is likely because the camera sensor is less than 720p but it has been up-scaled via interpolation by software.

Nice one! One of its good features is that it has a viewfinder... a tunnel viewfinder which in those days were featured in most compacts but nowadays are only found in professional compacts above $600 (AUD).

Panasonic Lumix FT3

The primary features of the FT3 were: The 10fps full resolution burst speed, the 4x optical + 2x smart zoom starting at a nice wide end of 28mm, the Full HD video recording with sound, and the full manual controls.

10fps burst speed
The FT3 has lots of burst mode options. You can sacrifice resolution for fps. Burst mode lasts up to 4 seconds on maximum resolution.

FPS RATING * * * *

4x zoom
The FT3 has very much the same amount of zoom as many other compact cameras do. This is alright but being able to get up closer would be nice.

ZOOM RATING * * *

FULL HD VIDEO
This camera also has full HD recording. This is very good unlike other compacts you can zoom while recording though there is a little sound when you do zoom.

VIDEO RATING * * * & 1/2

Everything Else
This camera is really solid and a little heavier than most compacts but it is unlike most compacts. The FT3 is waterproof to 12 meters, shockproof to 2 meters (6 .6 feet) and freeze proof. Perfect if you want to take photos underwater or even in the rain.
It has many modes including; macro mode for close up pictures, 3D photo mode which enables you to take 3D photos, Starry Sky mode which enables you to get good shots of the sky with up to 60 seconds of exposure.
ISO is from 100 to 1600 pictures are great above 600. The FT3 has 12 megapixel resolution, GPS sensor, altimeter and many other features.

MANUAL MODES * * * * & 1/2

Downfalls
There is no view finder and no touch screen. The screen size is also smaller than normal and you might get yourself lost with all the features.

OVERALL * * * * 1/2
Pros: High burst rate, good wide angle, large and high resolution screen, full manual controls, 1080p video, 3D photos, waterproof, GPS, shockproof, altimeter and great features

Cons: No view finder, Small screen, ISO

P.S. I bought this camera but have not taken photos under water yet.

Optional information: This camera was tested using a 16GB Class 4 SD HC card.

Lol! I didn't mean follow mine so closely! I meant just follow... you know... just the basics... anyway, are you sure it has a 10fps burst speed? If so its a great camera! I also like that it has an altimeter.  smile

You can increase frame rate by lowering resolution. I think. Camera currently has 3.3 fps on 12 megapixels.

Because you said it had 10 on the review... anyways. I'll put it up when I get the time.

Well I know it can do 30 fps at 1 megapixel. Because that's the HD recording and resolution.

It's alright. I love editing my shots and changing the colour slightly to introduce or change the mood of the picture.

I assume that this is just DSLR professional cameras. If isn't I might review my Kodak Easyshare M340, and my old Fujifilm Finepix 2800Zoom (When I say old, I mean it is only 2 megapixels, and uses SmartCards instead of SD cards.)
