You know, I was browsing the forums as usual, and something caught my eye.
"92% of teens have turned to rap. If you are one of the 8% who still listens to real music, put this in your sig."You know, I have to ask... I've seen similar things with other music genre types, but I haven't seen enough evidence to support this conclusion. One study at a camp showed that, while hip-hop and rap stations are the most popular for teens, only 43 percent actively listen to rap and hip-hop. And there are other studies that don't suggest the number hits in the 90s percentile. Which leads to my question:
Where are people getting this stuff for this sig chain? Otherwise I'd have to say that people are just making up an arbitrary number just to support their cause.![]()
Well, they are. (Making up an arbitrary number.) I've seen the same message with 'rap' replaced with something else like 'pop', 'metal', etc. So yes, there really is no factual basis to any of this.

Im thinking that rap is a lot like all other genres, because songs are making things rhyme, but rap just does it a different way. You should make a chain thing.

You can't call Flobots rap because they aren't. They're alternative hip-hop.

@PandaGuy: Again, that's mainstream rap. Have I ever heard Deltron 3030, Flobots, or A Tribe Called Quest refer to women as "female dogs". No. Go listen to some actual rap, instead of the mainstream crud, that's all about drugs, drinking, female dogs, gardening tools, and partying.
And classical music is good, but don't be saying it's the only good stuff. You are just sounding like a 2000 year old angry man ranting about how kids these days suck, instead of actually having a well-thought out, researched, unbiased on musical taste opinion.

That proves that someone who listens to hip hop doesn't have to only listen to hip hop. I listen to A Tribe Called Quest one minute, The Ramones the next, Arcade Fire the next, Green Day the next, Operation Ivy the next, Metallica the next...

Er, gardening tools? First of all, I am not a 2000-year-old man just because I favor classical music. If anything, it's a lot better than the new-aged garbage, but that's not to say everything is bad. And just because I like classical music, it doesn't mean that's the only type of music I like. Sometimes I find myself singing pop songs. I like a few of them. Nothing is wrong with pop alone, but I hate it when they talk about partying and inappropriate things. Why do I hate rap so much? Well, let's be reasonable, a mass majority of the songs talk about all the stuff I mentioned previously. Much of it has made a huge impact on today's generation and, even though you may not know the lyrics, the messages still seep into your subconscious. Lastly, the way you expressed yourself here is just downright disrespectful. Classical music is not just for old men, which I find very annoying and stereotypical, it's for everyone. Just because I dislike rap, though, it doesn't mean I'm going to infiltrate people's radios and destroy rap altogether. Well, technically, that's impossible, but it's just ridiculous. Listen to rap all you want, but don't go hating on the classics.

To further simplify my reply, when did I say classical music was the only good music? I just used it for comparison, so I can make my message clear. Like I said earlier, I like some of the music today, but I only hate the inappropriate ones.

Listen to the classics all you want, but don't go hating on rap
Listen to anything all you want, but don't go hating on other music.
Let's just keep this all simple. Why don't we all stop? The reason this debate started is because of this whole topic altogether. Some of you support rap and some of you find it annoying. We each have our opinion, so this topic should be closed very soon. As you can see, it's stirring up a lot of commotion.

Well, I guess you do have a point, sanddude, but much of it is still full of garbage. And just because some rap has violins in them, it doesn't mean it's automatically clean. You can have violins and drugs mixed in one song, pal.

Most of those rap artists talk about drug in a negative matter.
And you said "respect other people's opinion"? I did. I specifically said that if you dislike it, it's fine. I'm not respecting an ignorant, inaccurate, biased chain letter.

...
I get what you mean, and I respect your opinion and I respect rappers and their songs, but Somelia said that most things without melody aren't music. And that is true, but rap can have a melody, or a beat, but most of the time it is inappropriate.
Anyways, @ the sig incident, they should've said:
Most teens listen to rap. If you're one of the few who don't, put this in your sig.
Anyways, Flobots are actually a really good band, and rap, hip hop, or alternative, if it's good, has singing or a beat, then it's technically 'music', but in some people's opinion, rap doesn't have enough instruments in it to be called music.
But if I could actually listen to rap, I bet I'd like it.
It's just WAAAAAAY too fast.

I said that I LIKE classical music. I didn't say that you were an old man for listening to it. I said the way you were ranting on how terrible today's society was is old man-ish. Oh, and it's not the rapper's fault the kids aren't behaving. It's their parents fault for not teaching and talking to their kids about things. Most mainstream rappers don't actually mean what they say. They're saying it because shock value sells.
And most of it is garbage? For the millionth time, it's the mainstream rap that you hear on the radio that makes up the negative stereotypes about it.
