You know, I was browsing the forums as usual, and something caught my eye.
"92% of teens have turned to rap. If you are one of the 8% who still listens to real music, put this in your sig."
Rap is real music, smart ones. Maybe it's not your personal taste of music (which is fine), but it's still real music. If you think so, you probably just heard a Lil Wayne song on the radio and said "wow that guy sucks so much dude so ill just assume that thats all rap in the world now im gonna make a chain letter about it man" (grammar errors intentional). Yes, Lil Wayne is a talentless poohead. So are most mainstream rappers. All they do is talk to a beat. But not all rappers are like that. There was a time when rap was actually political. It talked about real things. Heck, some rappers even have VIOLINS in some of their songs (Flobots, anybody?). If that's not your personal taste in music fine. But it's real music.
And rap is not just racism, swearing, sexism, drugs, etc. Again, that's most mainstream rappers. There is political rap like I mentioned. It can be socially conscious. There are rappers like De La Soul, Mos Def, Common, and Lupe Fiasco, who are socially conscious, anti-violent, and respect women. But before doing any research on the subject, you made a chain letter.
If you have actually taken time to listen to more then 7 or 8 rappers, and dislike the genre, fine. Each to his own. But if you did, you wouldn't make this ridicoulous, ignorant, inaccurate chain letter.
Now discussify.

Most people don't understand: There is a difference between rap and hip-hop. Rap, which often just consists of someone talking over a drum machine, isn't really music. Hip-hop is what includes violins and stuff like that.
I neither like nor respect rap. I don't like most hip-hop, but I respect it.

It's just some peoples opinions, so you shouldn't freak about it. The reason people say rap isnt real music isn't because whats in the songs, but the auto-tune and not as many real instruments in other genres, like guitars. Also, many rappers dont change the pitch of their voice, and its more like shouting. Im not saying its good to be biased like the chain letter thing, but, yeah.

I don't hear any shouting in rap...and the only rapper I know who autotunes is T-Pain.

Still hate rap. There's nothing you can do about it.
And I could argue that it's not "music" because it has no melody. Sure not all rappers swear, but they just talk, mostly. In rhyme. I on the other hand respect those who can sing in tune without Autotune. Those who can SING.

If you listen to a band like the beatles or something, then eminem, there is a sure difference. But that is just the genre, I guess.

So if it has no singing, it's automatically not music?
If you dislike rap, fine, but it takes talent.

Rap is poetry, put into a beat. Rapping is singing. It takes skill. Don't believe me? Listen to b.o.b, Tinie Tempah, Lupe Fiasco, they have talent.

Could you give me a ytrepeat link to one of those non-mainstream rappers? I've never heard of them
Im thinking that rap is a lot like all other genres, because songs are making things rhyme, but rap just does it a different way. You should make a chain thing.

THIS. I dislike rap a lot. A LOT.
I prefer music that has a point to it and does not talk about drugs, partying, and other things.
BUT IS JUST AN OPINION!
Anyway, someone should close this topic. It is getting pretty flamey.

Maybe you should stop being such a smart alec and respect others opinions. I find rap annoying, repetitive, inappropriate, and way too fast. Yeah, you're correct when you say it isn't all about swearing and drugs, but 70% of the time it is. I recently unraveled the lyrics to one rap song (which I had stumbled upon on a radio station) and I found quite a few sexist and inappropriate stuff. For example, it was referring to women as "female dogs" and talking about drinking, nudity, partying all night long, and going "crazy". And that was just the first song that came up when I first put it on that station. It makes me wonder what else was inappropriate. Also, when you compare today's mainstream garbage to classical music and famous composers (like Mozart) from back in the day, you could very well say it's much better than all the rap you hear today because A) it's peaceful and actually had some class (hence the name "classical music") and B) none of them talked about killing and drugs. Today's music (if I could even call it that) centers too much on partying. Just take a look at songs from the early 2000s (heck. even 2009), there was much more decency and it wasn't all about partying, as it is today. It just goes to show you how different the world becomes, even after just two years. That's why I believe today's generation of kids is becoming worse and worse. You see little toddlers cussing at their parents. I've even been spat at by little kindergarteners and I'm 13. A lot of it has to do with media putting out a bunch of junk.

Yeah!
Woo!
I like Eminem, most of his raps have an underlying point in all that cursing...
E.x. White America: Seems like a racist song, but addressed the racism in rap back in the day.

You know, I have to ask... I've seen similar things with other music genre types, but I haven't seen enough evidence to support this conclusion. One study at a camp showed that, while hip-hop and rap stations are the most popular for teens, only 43 percent actively listen to rap and hip-hop. And there are other studies that don't suggest the number hits in the 90s percentile. Which leads to my question:
Where are people getting this stuff for this sig chain? Otherwise I'd have to say that people are just making up an arbitrary number just to support their cause.

You guys should check out franz ferdinand, the strokes and queens of the stone age. Whoa. Cats fighting or something outside my window. Freaky. Now back onto what I was saying. You should check out some of those alternative bands. And whatever you hear or see, green day is NOT alternative. Itunes got it all wrong.
