Dead Tadpoles D:

I brought home 4 tadpoles from a stream a few weeks ago, and they were getting closer to being frogs. They had arms and long legs (long tails still) and they were perfectly fine yesterday. They had a lot of lettuce and rotting plants to eat, and they were in water from their natural habitat. But they all died this morning, and I don't know why... has anyone ever kept tadpoles before and knows why that would happen?
A) They needed to start breathing and couldn't climb up onto the rocks for air
B) The water wasn't clean from sitting there, or there was some disease in it
C) They just couldn't live away from their natural habitat
D) Other

Re: Dead Tadpoles D:

I don't know really much about tadpoles...
Frogs are our current topic in biology class, though... maybe I'll ask my teacher about it.
But I actually know A is wrong because they can also breath in water.

Cool, thanks

Well @A, I think at a certain point they need to come up to breathe straight air, but I'm not sure. I don't think their lungs would be developed enough at that point anyway

They can actually breathe with their skin. (I know that's funny, but it's true)

I never heard of that. I thought it was that they could drink with their skin, because it's permiable. But maybe it's actually both

Well, I've kept a moth in a jar and it laid eggs. The eggs hatched soon after. Then they all mysteriously died. You probably made the same mistake I did. Are you sure punched enough holes? Maybe the food you gave them made them sick. You should've done more research before you got the tadpoles to begin with.

Yeah, I had them in a tank with tons ventilation slits on top.
When I was in first grade, I read tons of books about frogs, and I do remember a lot from that, but maybe I should've done more research... I was basically just relying on a kid's book about frogs and the Internet, and one of my friends who keeps tadpoles. But maybe the book wasn't that accurate, because it said it'd take weeks for their arms to grow in, and then it only took one week.

It varies for some, but Googling something like "tadpole care" would've been mighty helpful.
