Penny offense: Man fined for paying fee in pennies

No lucky pennies here: Police have charged Jason West, an aggrieved medical patient in Vernal, Utah, with disorderly conduct. His alleged crime? Attempting to pay a disputed medical bill of $25 entirely in pennies.

West isn't alone in the ranks of penny protesters. A wise guy in Frederick, Maryland, showed up at the county clerk's office last summer with bags of cash to pay off his tax bill with $966.86 in change.

And a New Jersey school district a few years back punished 29 students who paid for their $2 school lunches in pennies--possibly as a prank--with two-day detentions. After parents protested, the students were pardoned. The school explained that the use of the small change slowed down the lunch line.

Typical.  It's not even a crime.  (Unless pennies don't exist in your particular country)

I think he was just sent to court for it and he'll be let out in like 5 days because of the lack of importance in the crime and then if he does it again they'll probably punish him further.

Um... pennies don't exist in my country. The smallest coin here is 10 cents.

Smallest coin in Australia is 5 cents and they want to get ride of that. Before you know it they'll start printing $1000 notes.

I have attempted to pay back $25 in $1 coins to my mum and she said no. So I payed in $5 notes instead.

LOL I saw that story a few hours ago. They can't do anything to him; it's not illegal.

Pennies are the worst. We should get rid of them like the Canadians. They're useless

Re: Penny offense: Man fined for paying fee in pennies

I took two coin bags full of change to a week-long school trip, where we stayed in dorms. On the Thursday, we got to go to a gifts kiosk, where a grumpy guy got mad when I paid £3.50 in loose change xD It took forever to count it out, the queue was huge!

Offending strangers since 2010.

Re: Penny offense: Man fined for paying fee in pennies

I think it's a bit silly to fine someone for trying to pay a bill in pennies. I've paid in pennies for a lot of things. There's no law against paying in pennies. Small change can slow down a line, but if that's the case, why not just ask customers to use penny rolls for easier counting, or have a coin counter machine installed somewhere so people can change the coins into bills?

Although it makes me wonder how people manage to carry all those pennies around. One time I out in a $20 bill in exchange for quarters at an arcade, and even that was pretty heavy. I can't imagine how $20 in pennies must feel.

Well, if you have pennies, what's the point of not using them? It's just silly.
