People overusing the "Remixing"

Lately, there has been too many project like "Light the Candle" where people just remix by putting adding there name, or something like that. I think that is not the point of remixing. I think its about using others projects as inspiration, and to build off of it, and stuff. What do you think we shall do?

Re: People overusing the "Remixing"

Long time no see...

If people want to make projects about "lighting the candle" you should let them do it, people can make projects about whatever they want.

1. Long time no see? I've never seen you before!

2. I don't agree with that. Though I do have an idea. What about you can only upload a remixed project if you've changed it this much: ___(a good amount and not just changing the sprite)

Re: People overusing the "Remixing"

I do believe you should remix sometimes so you don't haave to start from nowhere, but I really think those projects are useless; I never do anything with them.

That would be a good idea, except there would be no real good way to make sure of it, as people could get around the filter by adding pointless scripts.

I don't want Scratch to end up as the spam breeding ground that MySpace is. I think that these projects are only here because the creators are a bunch of lame-o's that have nothing better to do with their time.

Let's get together and flag these projects  wink

Thank you, Zelda123, for pointing that out.  My advice is to just tolerate the situation for a little while more.  I know there is a fix in the works.

A fix in the works I hear? Ok then, I mean I had another idea, which is get rid of the "Most Remixed Lately", though again,  sometimes there are actual good ones so we don't want to do that.

Scratch is for kids, seriously.  smile  When they remix those projects they feel like part of a community that supports them and their interests. It's just a game, like any other game kids play when they are in a group. Let the children have fun.  big_smile

Re: People overusing the "Remixing"

Stuff that bugs me about Scratch:
1. Remix and pass it on projects. I mean it might be cool to watch the number grow, but some aren't even interactive!!! At least with "light a candle" people can actually use their skills (take one look at hnmwilson's candle for proof). I can tolerate projects where you can actually affect things with your mouse!
2. Top remixed scams. Okay, I know this should belong in #1, but
cool things the hated, cool things the dreaded, cool things the DESPISED has opened a new realm of easy ways to get the frontpage. How long is it before we see "stupid pixel [289]" up there? NOT VERY!!!
3. I'm leaving. Great. People waste front-page slots with a stupid publicity stunt, then by the time you've read the small print, they've come back. And everybody treats them like a hero. It's a really, really annoying thing to do!!!
4. This project sucks. Wow. You've gone out of your way to steal somebody else's happiness. I flag them whenever I see them, people! DO THE SAME!!!
5. Inappropriate stuff. "Oh yeah, I'll make a privates joke and then post it to the Web!! HA HA HA!!!" These people are not pornogrophers, they are just stupid. Again, flag these.
6. Politics debates. Otherwise known as forumcide. No logic. No reason. No brains! Just "BLAH BLAH BLAH [insert person] IS A [terrorist, gambler, geezer, idiot, and any number of dergatory comments]." It gets really annoying! The only thing that makes these debates worse than they already are is when abortion is slapped on there. "YESNOYESNOYESNOYESNOYESNO!!!!!" Quit it. Please.

Okay, that's it. Hopefully, this will stop soon... but it felt good to let off steam.

Number 3 and 4 are serious issues...* me off. Losers just do that for attention. My god, if you aren't on the popular page start learning more about Scratch and make better projects! Not waste time on stupid publicity stunts.  smile
And number 4. Helpful advice and criticism, not just telling someone they suck, or they're project is stupid, is the key to growth. If you want to complement, do it, but unless you have something constructive to say don't add anything negative.

The "remix-and-pass-it-on" projects promote collaboration and make the site more kid-friendly. These kind of projects are also a good start for beginner Scratchers. It's only my opinion though...

I agree fully with all of it. You get project thats taken you hours (eg. i got projects with over 500 scripts) and then people get on top love it because they said they'll quit if they dont... If you have a attadue like that then you wont get for in more complex languages like action script (Ive had 5 blamed projects from newgrounds but i keep trying). And saying something like you are bad, or this is terrable doesint hel the author one little bit, something they can work of is better like; try adding..
and ofcorse remix and pass along, pointless. Yea, it makes people feel part of the comunity but still, i disagree with them. I feel that to get onto things like top remixed/loved it has to actually be more then one picture, or one line of text, and if a project like this does come on, just kick it off from loved/remixed so proper projects get a chanse!

(I would have replied earlier but for some reason I couldn't log in)
Well to me, when somebody makes something thats meant to be remixed (not counting the remix pass-it-on) like an engine, or something, then you can see that person's creativity, and look at maybe any funny quote, or any of the cool stuff they added to really make it their own, and special...(brings tears to my eyes lol). I mean with the remix pass-it-on, you just maybe add a picture, and think of it as something for popularity. If everybody knows you and your popular and rich for example, then good for you your good and talanted at making money, but if you make something that inspires people, and atleast mostly original, then well, give yourself a pat on the back lol.

Get what I'm saying?

Agree 100%. I know this site is for kids, but that shouldn't make it a sandbox where people can post whatever they want. If you want an annoying site where 99% of the content is plagiarized * that nobody cares about, please feel free to join MySpace.

Remember back in the days of "Classic Scratch" (Early-2007 and before), when the entire site had worthwhile projects. When you could use your first name alone as your username, when the project number in the URL was only 3 digits... ah memories..... *sob*

Okay I'm done being dramatic.

But seriously, nobody CARES if you want to leave and come back 5 minutes later, and nobody CARES about your "remix this!" chain projects.

I myself am a kid, I'm only 14, but I personally miss the early Scratch era when none of this was a problem.

I guess my key point is, think LONG AND HARD before you click the "Share" button. Just think "Is this a project that people will ENJOY, or a project what will just get people hating me, and me leaving the site for a whole ten minutes?"

People should not have to think "Long and hard" unless they are sharing a project against the Terms of Use. Otherwise, they should feel free to post whatever projects they want to.

Okay, that's it. Hopefully, this will stop soon... but it felt good to let off steam.

</rant>

People should not have to think "Long and hard" unless they are sharing a project against the Terms of Use. Otherwise, they should feel free to post whatever projects they want to.

That is, until someone starts the "Everyone! Make 100 remixes of this project under a different name!" chain.
