Whats the difference between Speed and Velocity?

Whats the difference between Speed and Velocity?

I think I know the answer but I am not really positive.

Re: Whats the difference between Speed and Velocity?

Speed: How fast something is going.
Velocity: Speed and Direction create velocity. Say I was in a car going right at 80 MPH, my velocity is 80 MPH Right.

Or 80 MPH East

and Speed has no direction, right?

Exactly. 80MPH=Speed
            80MPH East=Velocity.

Re: Whats the difference between Speed and Velocity?

Velocity, like in Scratch projects, needs an axis assigned to it. Speed, in real life, tells you how many of one measurement you are going in a set time.

Ok I get it. So 5 mph North= -5 mph South

No, it's just a weird way of thinking about it  tongue

I mean, it IS true. I wish the dang 60second rule wasn't true...

Yeah, true but it could appear in a problem.

Re: Whats the difference between Speed and Velocity?

Speed is displacement over time no direction. Velocity takes direction into account.

What is the average speed and  velocity of a man who travels by car from his home to the shops and back again? Given the man travels at 60km/h and it takes 60 minutes to do the trip.

Velocity is 0 ms-1 in any direction
Average speed is 60 km/h

Well, it is late at night, at least for most people on the forums. Speaking of which, I should really go to bed. I need to be up in 5 hours.

Anyway, everyone else here has summed it up pretty well the difference between speed and velocity. Speed is a scalar quantity (magnitude but no direction) and velocity is a vector quantity. (Speed and direction)

Velocity is 0 meters per second. Any direction as direction does not matter.

Umm...
Velocity is the slide-ness, that you get when slowing down in a car, etc.
Like ice effect.
So, say you were at 50 MPH in a car. The velocity is 0 MPH. Then you slow down, it goes to 25 MPH in velocity, then slows back to 0 MPH.

No.

Everyone else is right, velocity=speed+direction.

Well, that's in Scratch then.
I've seen projects that call their slide-effect "vel" which is short for "velocity".

If the slide-effect makes whatever it is go to the side a little, then maybe it's velocity.

Okay. Then it's velocity, and a simple way of putting it is speed+direction.

For instance, you're going 24 miles per hour. You swerve to the west, keeping the same speed. That would be 24 mph west.
