I have wondered the same thing, since I am making a mod based on 1.0. There is a ScratchSkin for Scratch 1.3.1, which should work for 1.2. They changed the reading method in 1.4, but it was the same from 1.0 to 1.3.1.

Changing the default sprite has nothing to do with the skin.
Just export the sprite and save it in (folder) > Media > Costumes .
Create new folders if you need to.

I thought it did, ls97 told me that's how to do it

Indeed. The correct and permanent way is to load it into the skin. The other method is possible, but if you distribute the image alone you won't have the new sprite.
I've never worked with 1.2, so I can't help.

Then again, you can just use the 1.3.1 skin.

Just make a sprite named DEFAULT under the costumes file.

That is exactly what I just said.

@ ls97
I try to do your tutorial on mod central, but whenever I load the 1.4 source and change the source code, load it, and save the image for the end user, it ALWAYS gives me an error. I still don't know what I do wrong

I Think You Make A Sprite Called "default.sprite" And It Works.

Just edit the defaultSprite in scratch skin, then reload it (See tiny.cc/vfaq)
