Many metal, punk, rap, and similar genres' artists swear and get a pretty good fanbase. Ranting against swearing doesn't make you cool either, they're just words like any other to me. They're fine unless directed to someone.
Do you even know what those words mean?!
I do. And that, my friends, is why I don't swear.
I wasn't trying to rant! It's true, you DO get 10x the fans.
Eminem has more fans than will smith.

To me you were only right on that people wouldn't care whether you swear or not. Personally I do but not because I think it's "cool" or whatever.
Everyone should be able to express him/herself in the way he/she wants, and that if you're making music you should do so for your own enjoyment rather than to get money of fans. If you enjoy not swearing when singing I'm fine with that though, but whether you swear or not doesn't define your singing abilities as implied by the title.
If you think about it, swear words are words like any other, except society labels them as "bad", "dirty", whatever. They're just part of the informal language to me.

imho, someone who swears may be trying to get a point across or such, someone who doesn't just doesn't swear, and someone who tries to fake swear is a loser who doesn't have the guts to say a curse word, but wabts to seem cool by "cursing"
I also agree with what technoguyx said, prove that you get 10x fans if you don't swear; give us a citation.

...I would suggest following these few tips.
1. Write your OWN song. It may be easier to have someone write it for you, but you don't want to end up like Rebecca Black. I personally like the song, but all those haters...
2. NEVER SMILE WHILE SINGING. It makes your voice sound so...I don't know. It just sounds idiotic. Smile during the rests.
3. Don't overdo the dancing. It makes it hard to sing well.
4. NEVER USE AUTOTUNE. Mostly a slightly out-of-tune natural voice is better than an autotuned perfect one. If you feel you need autotune to sing at all, don't sing.
5. Write meaningful lyrics. Enough is said.
6. Open your mouth pretty tall while singing. If you don't, it sounds like "mmmh hmmm mmmh mmh mmmuh. mmh. mmh.
7. Don't embarrass yourself. It shows.
8. If you're female, don't act all...bratty. I mean, like Jenna Rose in "My Jeans." Her voice was okay, but the lyrics were all...snobbish.
9. Oh my gosh DON'T SWEAR. Many people wouldn't care whether you swore or not, but believe me, you'd get 10x the fans if you don't. And swearing DOES NOT make you cool.
10. Have fun! If you don't like the song, discard it and write a new one.
Well, what do you think?
I like your tips.
I write my own songs.

Okay, for one, my entire elementary school except one person hates Eminem, but only because he swears. That's over 300 people for you.

No offense to everybody in your elementary school, but cursing does not make somebody an automatic bad artist. and I don't like eminem at all- this is just the truth
you guys are what an average of ten? curse words seem awful but once the real world gets you you'll see how stupid that was
there isn't a problem with cursing so long as:
it's not excessive
It's not targeting somebody
Otherwise they can be used for good. unless you're an anti first amendment type person

That is different than cursing. And once again it depends on the perspective
it's like having a song called I like war. Good meaning? no
Then let's say you have a song called I hate war. is it still bad because it mentions war?
