Why Does Everyone Hate Slash?

I'd like some constructive criticism on what I can do to make Slash better and unhated.

Also, I'd like to clear up some misconceptions:

1. The color scheme is changeable. There is an option in the edit menu.

2. You can BYOB in Slash.

3. There are many uncopied blocks in Slash.

BYOB belongs to someone else. Other than that no brand new features are in it.

There's nothing really innovative I found in Slash. Sure it's got heaps of extra blocks, but it's no big innovation.

A mod should have all the features it can, (as long as they don't take away from the mod as a whole) so that it can make the best projects possible. That's the idea of Slash. BYOB has a bunch of features that are in a different direction than what I do, so I added what Slash was back then to it to get what Slash is today. I'm currently working on a project that requires both features from Slash, such as mind control and cloning (and more) and features from BYOB, such as creating blocks and the launch block. I just want to make a mod that makes people happy by letting them do what they want.

Re: Why Does Everyone Hate Slash?

something that would help you. Look around the advanced topics for ideas and things that people want. Then, Slash would have lots of more thumbs up (yeah, I do think it is a pretty cool mod, exept that your default color settings hurt my eyes). also, a few improvements that I would like to list:
1) make the color settings user freindly-make it so that the user can change each one to his own color (personly what I want changed)
2) request features and program them or MAKE SOME THING AWESOME THAt NO OTHER MOD HAS!!

I'm trying to do 2 here right now.

For the color scheme, it's a bit of simple squeak programming. You need to add an option to the menu, and add a copy of the original color changing thing (it's one of the .txt files when you download Slash) with the colors changed.

I agree. And it's buggy: When I went to the normal Scratch scheme, it went in presenation mode instead.

it would be cool if you could get stuff from the block library and it was built in to the menu.

It needs to go into presentation mode to change the color scheme. Once you exit presentation mode, the color scheme is the one you selected.

Re: Why Does Everyone Hate Slash?

I'd only use Scratch modifications if they were actually useful. The only really useful feature I know so far from your mod is BYOB and that isn't even yours'. But then again I haven't tried the mod out, don't feel like it though.

Re: Why Does Everyone Hate Slash?

One thing I noticed that you did is that you fixed the "Squeak's memory is getting low" error, which I don't know of any other mod that has that fixed.  smile  I don't hate it, I just think that you didn't add the finishing touches to make it more professional before you released it.

Really? I actually didn't mean to fix it. Either it was fixed in BYOB, or I unintentionally fixed it by changing the color scheme or something.

Also, how can I make it more professional?

Maybe you can fix a lot of the bugs. Also, I don't know how to use the new block type, so maybe you can make a help dialog for that.

Re: Why Does Everyone Hate Slash?

The color scheme! It burrrrnns!  yikes
Having bright (clashing) boxes for a script editor isn't exactly the most popular idea. Just keep the original color scheme (without options for changing it), and Slash's popularity might go up.

You have some great blocks there, however many of them aren't needed and just take up space. You should make a list of custom blocks where users can select which ones to add into the block selector (or whatever it's called). Also, change the < () is within () of () > block to < () is between () and () >, and change [ [] run] to [tell [] to].

Most of the reporter blocks you added have the check box next to them for displaying them in the stage. The check boxes not needed, and just take up space, so I suggest you remove them.

I understand why you added the BYOB blocks and block editor, but that's going too far with stealing blocks. You should find your own way of making a block editor/first class blocks. And if you do, could you also add a way of making squeak code blocks?

There are some images in Slash which really need fixing up. The 'Squeak' and 'More'  buttons have a white border around them, and look odd when selected. The color for 'Squeak' blocks really strains your eyes, you should make it darker. The color of the 'More' button doesn't match the 'More' blocks. The scroll bars and dialogs look really low resolution, it would be much better if you left it as the original. Also, remove the white border around the main sprite, and try to make it higher resolution.

And one more thing: The new block type doesn't look so great either. Change it to something like straight sides or jagged edges.

If you made these changes, than Slash would be one of my most recommended mods.  smile

By the way, what computer to you have? Judging by the graphics and cursors, you must have an old computer. If this is the case, then I suggest looking at your mod on a computer with better graphics.

I have a computer with good graphics, and I've used Slash on many computers. It took forever to get the costume block in it's current thing. BYOB stays. Slash is a BYOB mod. I never changed the scroll bars. I'll make the original scheme default in the next version, and look at some of the other stuff that you mentioned, though. (sorry about the mixed-up response order)

Don't just skip to the end though otherwise you won't be able to read the middle, which is most important. Now you must be wondering why you just read all that, the reason is you may have not noticed something, read it again and see if you notice it this time  smile

I didn't. The online version is uses etoys, so I gave etoys credit there. BYOB is given credit. Also, you click Color scheme... on the edit menu to get the avalible color schemes. At some point I might make a GUIfied way of making the color scheme change, but for now, it's not.
