Re: Building a home PC made of spare parts ...

...Out of spare parts? I hope you have a lot of spare parts, because you're going to have a tough time finding compatible components. (Despite most things being compatible, the motherboard's socket has to match the processor, which needs to have a controller for the kind of RAM you're using, etc.)

Not that it's impossible by any means. It's just going to be a bit of a pain, especially if it doesn't post when you fire it up and you have to go figure out what's not working.)

Re: Building a home PC made of spare parts ...

If you want, you can first simulate the computer in Logisim, then using that to build the actual computer.

Tip: Use atleast 16bit for best results.

Re: Building a home PC made of spare parts ...

potentially, you could make a super machine if you found enough parts. With this, you'd probably put ubuntu (I would use kubuntu, just because it looks pretty  tongue  ) to save money from another windows installation.

I tried doing this once with parts from my basement, but I never got it working because it kind of exploded halfway through

Sounds like fun. What type of computer are you thinking of ending up with? Server? Gaming? Media?

For a while, I was making a PC out of old parts in our garage (Pentium 1 w/ OverDrive, Voodoo5, SoundBlaster Live!, etc.), but stopped, because we don't have a spare monitor  sad
