Re: Geekiness

I'm basically tech support for my parents. So far I've troubleshooted various every-day problems, answered a myriad of questions on how do do this or that, replaced two hard drives, and installed Ubuntu on my dad's computer. Does that count?  big_smile

Re: Geekiness

Installing a bootloader to the wrong hard drive is no fun at all. I got windows 7 back up and running by installing the windows vista bootloader because I didn't know where the win 7 disk was. I didn't even know that bootloaders were stored on the hard drive! I thought they were stored in the BIOS memory or something. I've pulled of a lot of stuff like that.

Saved  a computer from the tip. <-- Which is when I learnt the most about computers. I was able to recover the information but no one supplied me with a usb data storage device to put the stuff on.

Re: Geekiness

I'm actually not that geeky, but here goes:

I wrote a program to talk to you in a very annoying way.
Yeah. Everyone thinks it's "awesome".
Here it is.

Code:

Set Talking = Wscript.CreateObject("SAPI.SpVoice")
Dim a
say=inputbox("Enter what you want the computer to say.")
count=inputbox("Enter the number of times to repeat.")
delay=inputbox("Enter the delay between repeats. (Milliseconds)")
if not isnumeric(count)then
wscript.quit
end if
if not isnumeric(delay)then
wscript.quit
end if
For a = ("1") to (count)
Talking.speak say
wscript.sleep(delay)
Next

It's VBScript.

Last year for Maths I had to go onto a maths website and log in. I never felt like doing it, so I created a program to login for me...

Re: Geekiness

I installed Linux on my decript old laptop, set up an mpd server and hooked it up to my stereo and an external hard drive with my music collection. Then I remote controlled it from my iPod and my laptop simultaneously. A cookie to anyone who actually ubderstood what I said.

Re: Geekiness

In older times, the term geek was used for the sideshow freak in a carnival who ate anything and everything.

A voice recording of a book.  If there are 1,000,000,000,000,000 people on Earth, 999,999,999,999,999 people know that.  You included.

Re: Geekiness

I am currently designing a browser game, have written and published a book (working on more), and have learned the text side to Python, figured out the basics of HTML and Javascript through looking at some web pages using the 'Edit in Notepad' on Internet Explorer and 'Javascript Editor' on Google Chrome, act as Tech Support to my parents (I can't tell you how annoying it is when they spend ten minutes trying to figure out how to do things like select multiple unconnected pieces of text at once), and have completely mastered Adobe Flash CS5.5 and I'm learning Actionscript now- and the Flash stuff has all been done in less than two months.  How's that?  Oh, and I almost forgot my understanding of advanced theoretical physics concepts, such as String theory, M theory, Singularities (basically black holes), multiple dimensions, the physical principle of several equations such as time dilation and the reason you can't go faster than the speed of light, and how to make a sibling crazy trying to tell them about it.

I know how to replace the icons for My Music and My Pictures.
I run a slightly modified version of Rockbox on my iPod.
