Hello, everyone.

I'm delighted that there is so much interest in Scratch 2.0 -- and I'm sorry that you could not all join the Scratch Day at MIT sprite cloning workshop.

We asked those who were at the workshop not to share copies of the software, and I appreciate that they have respected that request. Please don't pressure them to share it.

Why did those at the Scratch Day workshop get to see a preview of the Scratch editor?

As Lightnin wrote, we test many versions of Scratch before we're satisfied with it, and having Scratchers try things is a key part of that testing. We test new ideas with small groups first. As we get closer to a finished version, we do alpha and beta tests with larger groups. The specific goal of this MIT Scratch Day workshop was to test the cloning feature with a small group. (Those who were there, please feel free to post your reactions and impressions about the cloning feature to: Clone Feedback.)

Why can't we share the preview software with everyone?

Because it is so far from finished that it would give a false impression of the final version. In the context of a workshop, we ask people to focus on the particular feature we are testing and ignore all the unfinished parts. Without that context, people seeing the software may assume that it is close to finished. In reality, I expect we'll make major changes to the UI and other features before the final release.

I love your enthusiasm and curiosity about Scratch 2.0. Please be patient. As we get closer to releasing Scratch 2.0, we will be asking for your help in alpha and beta testing.

While I understand that you want to keep it a small group, is it also possible to share it with other Scratch Day events, in other places?
Just so you know, I'm opposed to drastic changes to the GUI, like moving the Stage to the left.

There was also a workshop at the Science Museum of Minnesota Scratch Day. That workshop focused on using color sensing with camera input.

Thanks for your feedback about the GUI. I've seen from posts on another thread that you're not the only one who feels that way. But don't worry, the GUI is one of those things that is far from final.
