I would call Metallica metal, and Queen Rock. Don't forget Journey!
You seem to have the somewhat jaded definition of Rock.

There's probably at least 40 different genres, making classification a lot more incredibly complicated and obscure. I once unwillingly sat through an hour long radio program about alternative rock's origins and the dive into post punk, and other post- genres (not only was it was horribly boring, I got extremely confused). Not to mention some songs don't just fit into one of the many categories.

According to wikipedia, the only music they do is Progressive rock and Psychadelic Rock.
Also accoridng to wikipedia, Pink Floyd was one ofthe many bands that made Progressive rock famous.

Alternative is what needs to be added. Features artists such as beck, the shins, foster the people. Dont forget punk either. The clash are a great example. There should also be an 'other' genre for artists such as weird al and parry gripp. I think the foo fighters can go under rock and alterantive, because in their newest album they are much more rock and in others they are more alternative.

Eer, Wierd Al would go under parody, but there is no real parody.
So more like a Pot-Pourris, like you said.
