NOTE: By the time I got here, there was 45 pages to this thread. So I haven't read them all If I say something here that someone else has, please feel free to ignore this!
First, I'd like to say that the new Flash player is AWESOME, for a number of reasons:
The player runs faster and smoother than the Java player, and a lot of my "problem" scripts that used to hang or go slowly online now go a lot faster. It's great, for a beta!
Second, I'd like to point out that everyone's timing scripts are now completely off. Everything that relied on a delay or worked based on the assumption that certain blocks take a long time in a script is broken. But I'd prefer to re-do my scripts to work with the new system than go back to the old s-l-o-o-o-o-w player any day!
Third, I'd like to make a suggestion. Unfortunately, it probably requires adding a block or two to Scratch, but oh well . I think that we could make this process a lot less painful if there was a block or two that were *specifically designed* to make scripts run at a certain speed. I remember trying to make animations or music videos and then finding out that when I ran them online, they completely broke. I don't know if it's possible to do so, but I'd like to suggest one or two blocks:
1) a Sensing block like the "Loud?" block that checks to see if the project is being run online or not. Even ignoring all my other suggestions, that would allow people who cared whether or not a project was online or not to make scripts behave themselves when they are
Maybe it could also tell the difference between the Java and Flash online players, and that would be even better
2) A control block that says "After" or "Later" and is structured like the If control block. This "Later" block would start the script on top, and wait for it to complete. It would then run the script underneath. I'm suggesting a block like this because for music videos you can't ever tell when a sound/music has started when a script is run online. I've personally spent an hour-or-two fine-tuning wait blocks to get animations to go with the music, put the script online, and then found out that the sound takes longer to start in the online player.

The Java seems faster loading to me, but flash is better when the project starts running.
