Why you ask? This ability would work particularly well in the requests forum, so if you got something you wanted, you could close the topic without losing that post. You would be able to close or re-open any of your topics if you wanted to. Only Scratchers would be able to close their own topics. Sorry New Scratchers. This would also be helpful for reference purposes. You would ONLY be able to close and re-open YOUR topics. If you have any ideas for anything else I should add, please tell me. Some people seem to be missing this so I'll put it in bold: If a moderator closed the topic though, the user wouldn't be able to re-open it. Thanks for your time and... Scratch on! (LOL, I sound like a mod
) Vote for it here!
BTW, if you're a moderator, I'm not trying to rob you of a job.

It doesn't take too much time to report the topic and the mods can close it pretty quickly...

I guess, but it was just an idea.

What if moderators are offline?
Once after I reported a topic a moderator went offline D:

I support it.
It's a lot faster than having to report it for a mod to close it.
...I'm not saying the mods are useless.

The problem is, this is a PunBB forums, and so it won't be that easy to give people (maybe just scratchers, not new scratchers?) close/reopen ability.
Also, no reopen ability. A thread could close for a flame war by a mod, and the user might reopen it...

I think commando was saying only close ability - not reopen

So you wait a little. Not going to kill anyone. ^^

I guess people don't like to wait.

What's the problem with it? We could just close our own threads, yet we can't reopen, like if a moderator closed it due to spam.

I don't think so.

What if other people don't want it to be closed?

Well, if you report it for closure, other people might not want it to be closed so that argument is invalid.

It is simple to close your own topic.
Click report on the first post, then ask a moderator to close it.
It saves moderators some work. Moderators could be using that time doing other stuff.

It would be quicker, and people would be more likely to close it since there's a button.

It doesn't take too much time, and that's their job.

Other than the grammatical mistake (there >> their), I completely agree.
And kayybee, what other stuff? There are enough to take care of all the reports.

My argument is simple:
When you report for a mod to close the topic, there's no discussion about it and it gets closed. Why shouldn't you be able to do that here?

I'm not sure what you're trying to say, can you explain it a bit more?

OK
I support this being able to close topics, just not re-opening them.
My point is that currently, to close a post, one clicks the report button and asks a mod to close it in the 'reason' field. I've never seen a mod object against closing it and instead just keep it open for the sake of it.
Well then, in this particular instance the mod can be replaced by the server. It wouldn't object either, and it would be faster.
Besides, any fears of abusing the close feature are not valid: when one closes a topic, they have to ask a mod to reopen it, so they'll think well before closing it. It's like a bee stinging someone -- you can't undo the consequences.
That's also why I think allowing also a reopen button would cause havoc.
