For users that will be using the downloaded version (I know I will, not because of internet connection), Scratch should be able to check for updates upon start-up and in a menu.

Good idea!

If Scratch was updated a lot, this would make more sense, but I think everyone will know when a new version of Scratch rolls around, since it's usually a pretty big deal. That's especially true with Scratch 2.0.

As Harakou said.
Though I think it would still be nice, we could have an option of how often it checks for an update, like once a day, once a week, or once a month.

As Harakou said.
It's just not updated enough for it to be worth it. What could be done though, to shrink downloads and keep updates coming, is for the Scratch Team to occasionaly upload a Squeak change set which could be imported via something similar to nXIII's patcher. That way small changes/fixes and extra blocks/bits could easily be imported without having to restart the program or having to download a large file.

I do like this ides, however, making a dialog pop up at the beginning which gets internet, isn't the best idea, it first of all goes super slow, like in bingo, then when it is done, the user may not have internet connection, so it would be of no use for them, I would say there should be a button to get updates, that way if you just go on for something quick, it will be quick.

This can be a little easier for people who use the program a lot and don't use the site so much. Updated a lot or not, I still think it should be added.
It can act like this:
First, Scratch will check a page that has the latest version. Let's say I have Scratch 2.0.523.5 (you never know). The page can check and if it has a higher number, say, 2.1.634.1, it will alert the user and the program can update itself. If page says the same version number or lower (again, you never know), it doesn't alert the user and nothing is downloaded. There would also be an option in a menu that would alert the user of an update or not.
