Hm... Maybe. It would help to see drafts if you needed help with coding or something  smile

No.

I don't like to post my projects until they're done.

Here's an idea:  Why not allow me to invite specific people to view (or even contribute) to a draft project?  This would enable people to work together on projects.

BTW, I would like an easy way to test my draft projects in the various platforms (java player, flash player, dev environment, etc.).

What if you wanted help with some of your code that wasn't working right (even though you are an amazing programer anyways  tongue )? It would help with collabs as well.

Maybe there should be a button for this like in Clutter....

I think scratchers, like me should given the option to choose which projects a public and which are private, that way its up to each individual user weather they wish to share whats been done and whats hasn't.

We were wondering if this would come up! The answer is yes - we are still planning to make a downloadable Scratch 2.0 application, so you can still work on projects "off line."  smile
I've updated the blog entry to make this clearer.

Re: Scratch 2.0 Update: Moving to the Cloud

I think people should not be able to see other people's projects, because what if you were working on a game and you didn't want people to see it until it was finished. Letting people see works-in-progress would ruin the surprise! Also, some projects are never things you want everyone to see. I made my mother a Mother's Day slideshow/e-card, and because it contained photos of my family and full names, it would breach my privacy rights, not to mention be very embarrassing. I suggest that once your project is saved, it is assigned a RANDOM url (if one's project URL for his least-recently saved project is scratch.mit.edu/users/one/unfinished_projects/1, then two's URL for his least recently saved project should NOT be scratch.mit.edu/users/two/unfinished_projects/1. A good random URL would be scratch.mit.edu/iw6%vsbz**cnixu364878776!5ghci5647$#). If you chose, the flash based coder could save a .HTML file to your computer. You could share this .HTML file to people you chose. That would be great so some select people could see your project, instead of only you. Also, going along with the customizable userpages idea, there could be a widget "Projects in progress" that you could hide or show. You could be able to hide or show  projects in that widget, too. Please respond to this by quoting this post if you like it.

Re: Scratch 2.0 Update: Moving to the Cloud

I think that draft viewing should work like galleries do, you can let friends in, everyone in, or keep everyone out.

Also good, there should be live coding shows like those at http://wonderfl.net/

You can see people build code and talk to them while they are doing it.

Hi, I am Archmage coder extraordinaire. I do Scratch, pascal, java, php, html, AS2 and AS3. Leave me a message if you want coding advice. Also check out my personal website, lots of good stuff about web development, Flash, and Scratch (v1 and v2) !

Re: Scratch 2.0 Update: Moving to the Cloud

You shouldn't automatically show everyone unfinished projects by people, because
1) A certain project could be a secret and doesn't want it to be exposed early
2) People might put some criticism on some unfinished projects (just a thought)
3) If people want to show unfinished projects, they could just publish it several times, overwriting the project with the newer one or create several different projects, showing progress.
But we should also show unfinished projects to certain people only (that is, without clicking share) so they can view the progress and edit it.

I also have another suggestion. You should allow us to show people a project's history as a project gets overwritten. It can show all the older versions of a project and let us download the older projects, but like I said, it should be some kind of option. I can understand if it can't be made such as disk space.  smile

And a note: the list I made about the unfinished project thing was made before I read the rest of the post.  tongue

Re: Scratch 2.0 Update: Moving to the Cloud

My thoughts about unfinished projects:
- Only certain users can see it (creator can set it to even only himself)
- Any edits made by others will be in a subdirectory
- Others cannot share without permission
- Leaking can be reported if wanted to (only valid if creator reports post/project)

Re: Scratch 2.0 Update: Moving to the Cloud

I have an idea! You could make a button that says something like: "Do you want others to view the unfinished draft?" If they check "yes" others could view the draft, and if they check "no" then they couldn't. Hope this idea helps!  smile

Re: Scratch 2.0 Update: Moving to the Cloud

"Should people be able to see other people's incomplete/draft projects?"

Without reading any other responses, I currently feel that it's quite obvious that Scratchers should by default, have their projects they are working on private to themselves, however they can optionally share it or enable some option to make it "public" as a "draft" or "work in progress" or "incomplete" -- or something along those lines. And as well, "release" it.

Also, "private" projects would display under a user's projects, however it would not show on the front page (perhaps with the exception of friend's latest projects? - not sure).

Now reading some other responses, I see some other points too. Sometimes you may only want to make a project just for a private presentation, or for something else similar. Thus you would want it private. Also, I agree with archmage -- live coding would be cool.

Re: Scratch 2.0 Update: Moving to the Cloud

I think the best way to do it would be to make it optional whether or not to make drafts viewable for everyone.

the following options SHOULD be available

Share Project (Like Normal)
Share Draft (allows others to see it, but not applicable for ANY front paging except "New Projects" (would be applicable upon "Sharing"))
Share Drafts To A Friend...allows sharing to a certain user by sending a notification with a link, also adding it to your "Projects" page* (both must have confirmed friendship)
An easy way to test in multiple enviroments

*the page where all you stuff you are still working on goes, NOT you normal projects page

apologizes for the boldness...

I don't think so. While it would be cool to see works-in-progress, I don't think I would like other Scratchers "looking over my shoulder," so to speak.  tongue  Sometimes, I want to figure my problems out on my own-- for me, that's a huge part of programming. There should be a "share draft" option, that allows people who wish to show their drafts do so.

There could be like a check box or something to allow other Scratchers to view the work in progress. If not, then it would be private until released.

I do really like this idea. Maybe you could optionally select a single project from your drafts  and make it appear in a user page widget called something like "What I'm working on..."

A related and cool idea would be to make all drafts that people select to show in "What I'm working on..." show up on a "Projects Scratchers want help with..." page. That way people who are interested in helping other Scratchers with their projects can check that list of projects, click on interesting ones and offer advice / feedback.

Ooohhh (*salivates*), that would be really awesome.....
There'd be some technical challenges to doing this, but it wouldn't be impossible. Might have to wait till we finish moving the platform to the web, but definitely fun. Is this on Scratch Suggestions yet? If it isn't, it should be.  smile

Thanks for keeping us continually informed!

I think that all suggestions above are pretty valid. I won't add another one since you probably already have so many to browse through, but I will say that I support archmage's suggestion entirely.

Looking forward to being able to actually test these features out!

On my old computer I have about 200 unfinished projects so I think it would clog up the site for any started project to be veiwable.
