My youngest has just started a Scarch project. She has tried saving it with the filename, story.
She gets the above message:
Save failed: Folder may be locked or read-only
The computer is running Windows XP, she is a user without admin privileges. I have left the computer on as she cannot save the file. I would be grateful for any help. or do I have to tell her to lose what she has done already?
I have tried as an administrator to change the file attributes, via properties as it is read-only. This does not work, apparently a problem Windows XP. I have also tried it with run>cmd> attrib -r.
My eldest uses Scratch and says she has never had this happen before. I, mother am writing this from this from my eldest laptop as she has a Scratch online account.
I hope you will be able to help me sort this, I am not that good with Windows anymore as I use Linux, but the children use Windows.
Thank you.

Try saving it to the desktop instead of a folder. That's what I always do, and it actually works. (even though the desktop can get really, I mean REALLY cluttered.)

Thank you so much for that. I got up this morning and tried that and it worked. So the computer has now been turned off. I shall have to remember that in future.
I wonder if the file can then be moved from the desktop to a folder?

Also remember this: another common reason for this error is that there are symbols in the file name.

Another place you can save projects are in: C:\Documents and Settings\[username]\My Documents\Scratch Projects
I believe that is the default place for saving projects.
