Right click it on the stage, and select which appearance you want.

Right-click the variable. A menu will pop up. Choose large to show a variable that only is a display, no labeling of the variable. Choose slider to get a variable that is changable by sliding it. You can right click it again if you want to set the min and max on a slider variable.
