How to use a self-made health bar with variables like in "Guardian"

I want to use a self-made health bar with variables but I am having difficulties to make change with out using costumes. e.g. the game "GUARDIAN 3D " has a self made health bar which uses variables to contol it and no other costumes. Can someone please help me?

Help will be much Appreciated.

Use the scripts of his score widget.It uses costumes in a way.The variables arent showing tho. http://scratch.mit.edu/projects/the_guardian/161167
