My main concern was the States, and I'm not entirely sure if it is just the country, when I opened it up, it showed someone in Hong-Kong ( not directly China ) and another one in a State ( Not directly United States ). I also think that it should be something that people can opt-in for, but I was also thinking, maybe an extra option "opt-in" would show the state, "Just Country" would show just the country, and "opt-out" keeps you out of it entirely ( and maybe add some more levels of Privacy ). But yes, I think people should at least have a decision whether to opt-in or opt-out.
It is just the country. Whenever a project from the USA is uploaded it shows up right in the geographic center of the USA (which is somewhere in Kansas), even if the project was uploaded from Boston or Los Angeles.
To be honest, the majority of people uploading projects are newcomers or people who are not as "engaged" in the community. I doubt those people would opt-in. So if we do that, the map would change very very slowly and would lose its appeal. At least I personally wouldn't find it very interesting to wait for a project uploaded from an opt-in member, it might take hours.
Given the valid concerns you and others raise, I am considering removing the map completely and just have it at our offices for our own amusement.
I was expecting this could bring valid privacy concerns so I must say I am not surprised. I can also imagine parents and teachers being even more worried as they might think the actual exact location is being displayed.

Well, I really think this idea is pretty cool, I don't want you to take it down. Though I think you should at least add some restrictions to keep with the Privacy Policy, or at least let the Scratchers' choose how public they are with their information. You could also maybe make another rule list/information wiki page about the application and how it works. ( Maybe link to it from the application. ( Some message is displayed like "Here you can learn more about the application!" )
Now that I look closer I can see that it is just the center, just had me worried for a second. ^.^ ( I don't seem to pay very close attention )
Edit: After looking at Wolfie's post, I think this is a great suggestion! Setting it as a different country might be workable. Though this does raise other problems like people pretending they are from a different country. But I don't know how honest we want the community, or how honest the community wants to be. Which is why I think it should be State/Just Country/Don't Show. Though that may pose problems as well. Any thoughts?

I have an idea similar to adriangl's post with the flat map. Perhaps if Scratchers were to Opt In showing their exact location, it would keep the Country's borderlines but keep leave the State borderlines out. Or maybe not have the city/town name not displayed, just the state.

About the country thing: people's countries are shown on their profile pages anyways.

People could easily overlap it with another map...
I still think the map should not be taken away but what Magnie suggested is vital.

This would definitely be something cool to have projected on a large Screen at Scratch Day though

My main priority was basically all of the Declares, and I'm unsure of in case it is only location, to look at opened this, it again highlighted a professional during Hong-Kong ( circuitously Japan ) and the other one out of a State ( Circuitously Nation ).<play sound[
