oh dear.... someone said about it being a learning environtment here (And if you check my spelling, i am still learning ) What about the people who are on here just to have fun? I don't really go on here to learn about programming. I come here to have fun. Anyway on a more topicated note, (If there is such word) I am disappointed, but i suppose it is for "Learners" maybe i should go on newsgrounds and learn some actionscript instead
Off topic even more: I won't do that. Don't worryThe main point of Scratch like it says is to "Imagine-Program-Create"and If we put a private messaging feature it will ruin the point of Scratch which is to have fun programing.People will only come to Scratch to chat and Scratch will turn into something like Aim.I know I don't want that But do you guys want that?
how about instead of having a pm, have an area on the users page where you can leave them a message. this message would not be private, but publicly acessable this would send a notification to the stated member allowing them to go straight to the messgae, giving scratch user's an easier way to communicate with each other. this would be helpfull for members who team up to make projects and talking to new members can often be as helpful as downloading thier projects.
this would solve both problems of having an easy to access comment area and the views on the messages being private
just a thought =p
Now that's the best idea we've heard yet.

I think PMing would be better for collabs and companies, but thats all its good for besides chatting.

Chatting is strongly discouraged, and collabs and companies are what their respective forums are for.
Also, I'm working on a Scratch Collaborations website called ScratchLabs which will have was to speak in semi-private conditions. It will not be private messaging.

You should lock this then (i am against PMs it I gave you the wrong idea. I can do it on my company's website anyway.)

ScratchLabs? That sounds cool.

What about giving passwords for a present? oh wait, they could just download and look at the passwords... AWW MAN that just ruins everything DX
Although I have to admit, personal messaging would be to much of a hassle

I disagree with you Buddy_ca111. What I think Andresmh was trying to say is that Scratch is meant to be a learning enviornment. Anything worth saying on Scratch is something that should be able to be viewed by the public, that way they can contribute. Private messaging is not neccesairily bad, although sometimes people use it for negative purposes. It's just that what would you say on there? Something Scratch related? If it is Scratch related, than it won't matter that it is viewed on the Site.
Private messaging can be used for what you like, but I don't think Scratch really has a need for something that can be done through other websites and/or e-mail.
Agreed. Scratch shouldn't be one of those PMing sites. My dad would say, "Get off of there!" and besides, PMing probaly would be used for flaming and cyber bullying if no one was watching it. People, if you wanna Private Message, go search on Google or somehing.

i understand what you are trying to say, but maybe you could have PMs going on but with scratch Mods Moderating the PMs like they would do with the comments
and
if the parent or guardian of that child is concerned about PMing, then they could have some sort of parent control and disallow the PMing via a password the parent can make up.

[b]I agree there shouldn't be PMing on Scratch.[b/] But what if you want to give your e-mail adress (or other private info) to a Scratcher that you don't want anyone else to see? You can't just mail him can you?

Nice idea, but it would work better is the parent or guardian were to have to enable it.
I don't think PMing is necessary because commenting should be fine. There shouldn't be anything needing to be secretive, but then there is still the collaboration issue.

You shouldn't REALLY be giving your email address to strangers you've met on the internet.
If you want to then fine. Go use another site!

What about my post above?
You shouldn't really be sharing your email address with people you haven't met, or people you can't trust. And the Scratch Team doesn't support it. But if you use another website to send you information, you won't have any trouble.

This annoys me a lot. I cannot find a spot to talk to someone for my magazine "What's Scratching" Without losing them because of other comments cluttered everywhere. Some people are more mature than to be rude, and at least add a messaging tool with age restrictions (Such as 12 and above) because it is getting annoying to talk to people over projects.
Besides, giving friendly information that you would otherwise want to keep secret, such as real name, wouldn't be possible without other people nosing in!

I wish people would stop asking for PMs on Scratch. x__x Scratch is a programming language, not a social networking site. If you want to chat, there are plenty of other places out there.
PM'ing essential for Scratchers to be able to work together without other people butting in. There is no way to tell someone something without the whole world seeing it!

well maybe we could have a messaging/commenting box on each users page?
Yes, that would work
I have Sometimes wanted to contact a user but can't unless I use a project, which can be "off topic"

People will see dude. That's why it's called PRIVATE messaging.

well I wish that you could. like for example if there's a cheat code on one of your games that you want to share with 1 user then what do you do?
