Ok so my private messaging idea didn't go quite well but what about private sharing? so people can work on collaborations?

Maybe for collabs, but they can just download it and then the creator can delete it, right? Or, if they have other forms of sending files, it can be emailed etc.
And it is like locking downloads in the following way: They both make it so not everyone can download. ^^

I think a program like Skype works just as well...

Many people use galleries for this purpose instead. I think galleries have an advantage because they give more transparency and possibly also hook the users more into waiting for the final version!
