Why Rock Music is Better Than Pop.

You thought I was gonna bring up a whole rant? Nah. But actually, I'm doing a (rather large) presentation of this as a school project for the finals. One of the method I'm presenting is results from surveys.

I want to hear your opinions. Do you think (any) rock is better than what's popular today (pop/hip-hop)? Why or why not? What do you think are the major pros/cons of rock/pop?

The finals of what? I would prefer rock over pop because I hate rap.

Those are two very different genres.

However, at this point I have no idea what "pop" and "rock" even mean.

I prefer rock to pop because pop takes no effort or talent whatsoever to make.

Basically, Before we graduate from the school we have to do a whole year long study and then present it at the end of the year.

Pop Rocks.  tongue

Anyway, rock is better because they don't use/abuse Auto-Tune.

Re: Why Rock Music is Better Than Pop.

I like rock for it's way of expressing feelings. The kind of rock that is good is grunge or something like that (like Breaking Benjamin or Nickleback).

Heavy metal and screamo rock (like As I Lay Dying) is stupid and the lyrics are totally incomprehensible.

Re: Why Rock Music is Better Than Pop.

Alright. Feedback it is.  *cracks knuckles*

"Pop" seems to be the norm these days; people who like the auto tune; the voice and drums/bass kind of music. While they have good beat, they lack any kind of thought in the lyrics department, and the use of auto tune means they really can't sing. Sure, the lyrics can mean something or tell a story, but they rarely do, and you can't hear them anyway. To me, this music sucks, makes my ears bleed, and makes me get into arguments when I start blasting some Metallica on my iPod and there are other people around.

"Rock", on the other hand, uses real instruments with people who are brave enough to actually sing. It's sometimes heavier, and usually it features darker-toned lyrics. I personally like artists who put meaning into their work, it makes the song that much better. If you listen to the lyrics, and kinda think about them, it may actually mean something. Dave Mustaine (Megadeth is really one person) or Metallica are both good examples of this. Now, while I am using much older bands, most any band formed before the new millennium used (and still uses) meaningful lyrics and songs.

In short, today's pop is usually like boring, cruddy songs that mean jack, while people who listen to rock (or anything like it) usually gets a better overall experience and listens to better music. Music quality started to decline around 2004 (approx), and everything since then has been horrible. Not many musicians today make real music, using real instruments, which is sad.

Ok, I'm done ranting/giving feedback over how pop is horrible and rock is better.

Re: Why Rock Music is Better Than Pop.

People have been saying that music has been in decline for as long as there has been music. Our perceptions of the past are a little skewed because only the best of the last generation's music makes it to this one. Not to say that should invalidate anyone's music preferences, but just something to think about when you try to pin a date or genre on the decline of music.  smile

Re: Why Rock Music is Better Than Pop.

Explain how the music industry is taking these pop artists, sugarcoating them with false looks and personalities, in order to get you to buy into it and generate as much cash as possible.

Then point out that (most) rock artists aren't guided purely by money and actually take the time to learn about music. Demonstrate how you need an advanced knowledge of musical theory and time signatures to compose a decent rock song, and why it's favored by those with extensive musical knowledge.

I think by that point, it'll be pretty clear  tongue

Re: Why Rock Music is Better Than Pop.

I like rock because Pop is all singing.  They are all Pop 'singers', and I've rarely seen a Pop band (Except Pink, but that's Pop-Rock).  Pop focuses on the singer.  Rock on the other hand is about the beat, rhythm, and music.  There are singing and vocals in rock, but instead of focusing on the singing, rock focuses on blending the singing with the drums, guitar and other instruments, and making the vocals go with the beat and rhythm.  The vocals are (in my opinion) better in Rock because they go better with the rest of the song.
This is just generally, and applies to MOST, but not all, Rock and Pop music.

Re: Why Rock Music is Better Than Pop.

Rock on one hand is classic, heavy, with lots of guitar emphasis.

Pop has peppy, fast beats, and a catchy tune.

Alternative is better than both.

Re: Why Rock Music is Better Than Pop.

I love hard rock; it's almost all I listen to. To be honest, I can't really explain why I like it.  hmm  It's just amazing music, in all its different varieties. Of course, Led Zeppelin defined the genre, so it's a perfect example. The blues and folk (yes, folk) influences, mixed with a heavy dose of rock (which, of course, has blues roots to start with) make for nice, hard music where musical quality and skill is still plain. Hard rock is about the music. The lyrics are there and often can have some meaning and thought (unlike the mindless drivel of today's pop), but in the end it's about the instruments.

And some of the oldies, Beatles, Rolling Stones, White Stripes. The Bomb.

So as it seems currently, rock music is winning because it has

Meaningful lyrics
Talented people
etc
As opposed to pop, or hip hop.
