I think they are masters if they get front paged a lot.
What do you think?

There really is no such thing as a "Master Scratcher".
Some people just get front-paged more, others do not. Likewise, some people are more familiar with programming certain things in Scratch when some are not.

+1 "Master Scratcher" does not exist in the Scratch community status, but there are community moderators, Scratchers, and New Scratchers, etc statuses. But, again, that's your own opinion.

+1 Same here. Let's just hope and help bring great games back to the front page again, then! Anyone with me?

i mean these astro and spritemaster guys aren't really bad at programming they just have a lot of room for improvement. there are some good games every once and a while, like 08jackt's games are pretty good

Actually I prefer more diversity. Scratch wasn't made just for gaming so I, for one, would like to see something else other than a game, animation, or simple run-of-the-mill remix chain up there.

That too! So, let me reword what I said up there. How about:
Let's just hope and help bring great projects back to the front page again, then!

I would find it rude to call someone a master Scratcher just because they are on the fromt page a lot.
Take Sprite-Master. (I'm sorry, but it's true.)
I really dislike his stuff, but not him. He is on the fromt page a lot.
So, that would be to say that the "cool kids" by default are "The Massters" so to speak.
Which I am against.
So that's why the only two sections I look at are Featured and Curated.
I believe that a "Master Scratcher" would be someone sympathetic, with charisma. So basically, a good poster.

Well, it all really depends on your opinion. There are loads of great programmers who get frontpaged, but what I see as a great programmer, somebody else may see as a very bad, bad [wo]man.

Well, a lot of 6 year old kids have scratch 'idols' that merely make two second animations of somebody saying pie or something... basically something that takes no skill. Besides Curated and Featured, the front page is nothing.

Fame is an illusion. Everyone referred to by the public as 'famous' says it is not that great, and I doubt it is.
Master Scratchers don't exist, and their only basis is public popularity.

Unfortunately, fame is not an illusion. Just because something doesn't mean anything and isn't important doesn't mean it's not there. Although nowadays it seems that the forums contain older people while the main website contains a bunch of ten year olds making gosh awful animations. An occasional good game will pop up though.

If you're a New Scratcher, how did you get a sig?

If they know everything there is to know about using scratch to create something, and they have mastered the art of using scratch.
The opposite of a new scratcher who still is trying to figure out what the different blocks are good for.
A master scratcher can make programs in scratch that are at least as good as a hobbyist C++ programmer could make using C++. Nevermind if they have less of an understanding of "computer architecture"; They have an intuitive way to manipulate media and abstract mathematical concepts and program structures, and have an ability to focus on algorithms. A Master can often figure out either the simplest or the most efficient way to do something. If someone in the real world figured out a way to make real scratch blocks that were put together manually, they could build code faster than most other programmers could type it.
A Master Scratcher can debug about anything, and knows how to make aesthetically pleasing projects. Despite the seeming lack of some data structures, a Master Scratcher can often be extremely creative in making things.
Most importantly, a Master Scratcher lives by the essential 3 principles of Scratch: Imagine, Program, and Share.
