(eh, you might notice that this is largely a cut-and-paste job from some previous comments I made earlier, I got lazy
)
I've been a mod since, what, around late 2009 so sometimes I get to see unusual trends when it comes to reports, and I've noticed an unusual one that's been coming up recently - people aren't flagging things right away.
It seems that flagging inappropriate material is becoming less and less frequent - or rather it's being done at later and later times, sometimes weeks after the original post has been made. And it's been a growing problem on both the main site and the forums, and when a mod isn't alerted right away, things have a tendency to be missed or not taken care of right away (particularly if a mod is taking care of something else at the moment and is not alerted to another problem at hand).
Sometimes, though, I think it might also be a case of people being too dependent on certain mods to do things - there have been cases where people have come up to me to do something (or blamed me for not taking care of something right away despite the fact that I'm not on the website 24/7) when all that can be done is for someone to hit the report button and another moderator can look into the issue.
Which leads to my question:
Do you use the report/flag button when you see something that needs a mod's attention? Why or why not?
EDIT:
Alrighty, so I decided to record my answers I've gotten so far (mind you, I posted this also on my dA account, so there are extra answers in there):
- didn't want to bother the moderators
- afraid to use the report button
- button not noticeable enough with New Scratchers, or New Scratchers thought it wasn't clickable
- differences in distinguishing what is and isn't inappropriate
- only feel need to report things that blatantly break ToU, let rest slide
- thinking that someone else reported the comment already so there's no need to report it again
Keep those answers comin'.

I use it unless it's something where I feel the case is too extreme... but I can't think of any examples right now.
EDIT: This makes me think of the TBG
Sometimes I'll recognize a thread as a duplicate and even see people thinking the same; people will say 'duplicate' or something like that, but there's barely ever a report
EDIT: Maybe this has to do with the color of the report button? I remember a long time ago when I saw something inappropriate but didn't report it because I felt too scared xD

I report/flag whenever I see something that a moderator should look at, and I try and report those things as soon as possible.
And no, I don't post whenever there's a duplicate topic or something like that - in those cases, I just quietly report it and go away. :3

Ooh, do remember give examples when you think of one.

That happens here, too. Similar situations occur with misplaced threads as well. I wonder why.

I was also thinking that it might just have to do with the word "report" in general. Maybe some Scratchers are too scared to hit the report button?

It sounds kind of wimpy to me, but I actually am kind of afraid to use the report button. I guess I'm worried I'll waste a moderator's time by reporting something that dosen't need reporting. Silly, I know.

I always use the report button. I made a topic about it, and started the wiki page.
@urhungry: read what I just linked, especially the topic.

Thanks for that link Scimonster. A sticky for it may be in order.
Thank you! I've proposed it for an ITopic, but it hasn't been ITopiced.
Maybe you will?

What's an ITopic? And what do you mean by I will?

Ah, I see. I truly need to go to the other forums more often.

Report I know a lot are scared of pressing a button like that (That link's to the report button) But i press it when i feel there is a case of needing reporting, want to close a thread, want to move a thread, want to rename a thread etc etc. I think a lot of mods have a lot of work because of me
Sorry

Just say something like "I don't know how to explain this - just go and take care of it".

See, here, people will post, "This is spam. Gaming the communiy. Flamebait" but rarely hit the report button. You can't expect a mod to be monitering 24/7, I thinkthe report button should be easir to see, not in a small corner.

I used to think that normal scratchers couldn't report posts because the colour makes it look like you can't use it. Just my opinion though, make it a different colour.

I usually report projects and comments, but posts are different for some reason.

The problem with the report button is that it's grayed out, making people think you can't use it.

I sometimes see that people flag before they actually understand whats going on. E.g. They think someone is trolling when its actually an inside joke between two scratchers.

Interesting... Just out of curiosity, what do you feel makes reporting forum posts different from reporting projects and project comments?

What do you mean "mods have a lot of work because of me"? This topic is about encouraging other to use the report button more.
