Scratch's blocks are essentially java blocks but put into a simple programming language.

They don't look much simpler, about the same in complexity.
I don't think Scratch was the first to use that block design either (correct me if I'm wrong please).

I've used it, it is simpler but the only think you can really do is put images in and put in buttons that switch images or make sounds play, or make calculators. You can't make animations or games.

There was an article posted on this months ago. Google did reference Scratch as one of it's inspirations.

It's been out for a while. Actually, they did copy Scratch. I think there's an about page that says "Inspired by MIT's Lifelong Kindergarden's Scratch.
