"Project Café"; the Wii 2.0

EDIT: CONFIRMED!

For those who haven't been following the news, Nintendo is supposedly set to announce a successor to the Wii, codenamed Project Café, at E3 this year. Numerous sources have been picking up on the story, and E3 themselves have hinted at it.

What we've heard so far:

- Hardware is supposedly as powerful or better than the PS3 and Xbox 360
- Nintendo is looking to recapture the hardcore market with this release
- HD graphics in 1080p resolution
- Backwards compatibility with current Wii games and software
- Little reliance on gimmicks to sell
- Third-party developers have said they are "very interested in working with it" upon seeing the console; launch titles in development now
- Plans for Nintendo to develop closer bonds with third-party developers
- Blu-ray optical drive
- Much different controller with a more "conventional" design
- Controller has built-in 6" screen and dual analog sticks
- Ability to stream full games through the controller
- Pre-release announcement later this month
- Late 2012 launch

Bear in mind nothing has been confirmed yet. However, the Wii's recent price drop and Nintendo's reluctance to reveal anything they have planned for E3 seems to hint that something big is coming.
Expect updates as more news is released.

So, what do you think? Is Nintendo going in the right direction with this?
Discuss.

I'm taking a break from Scratch until 2.0 comes out. Any messages sent between then and now probably won't be read - sorry.

Nintendo has been degrading... 3ds is not exactly pwnage, wii is lame, XL was pointless, and the dsi they just turned it into an ipod with a cartridge slot.  roll

This will fail.

Re: "Project Café"; the Wii 2.0

Nintendo's kinda behind, with respect.

They have been lacking in online friendliness and tech power in particular. This is what the other 2 major systems have, and is what people are used to. If they want this to be on top, they better fix those problems with Café, and make it work well. However, I don't think I'll get this. I'm not much of a Nintendo fan anymore.

Yes, my sig is very pretty, isn't it?

What I meant was system wise. They all kinda fail in one way or another. The games are fine however.

I can't speak for Necromaster, but I can give my own opinion of the 3DS (though I'm kind of biased). It's an interesting idea, but it isn't really practical. I can't even see the 3DS in 3D, because I am one-eyed.

Re: "Project Café"; the Wii 2.0

I don't know if it'll be worth it...It's one thing to play Wii with something that fits well in your hand, it's another to play it with a controller that has a 6" screen...it doesn't sound like it'll be that much like the Wii at all.   The only games I can think of that would work with that are Mario Kart and other racing games.

Re: "Project Café"; the Wii 2.0

Nah (to the negative comments). I love Nintendo. The problem is, Nintendo's approach to gaming is complete different than that of Sony and Microsoft. So many people have expectations that the Wii (or other Nintendo console) doesn't meet. Not because the system is bad, but because it's different. That's where Nintendo gets into trouble.

Just remember, the Wii far outranks the PS3 and Xbox in sales.  tongue

Re: "Project Café"; the Wii 2.0

I personally do not dislike the Wii. I just don't enjoy it as much as my PS3. I can't stand the X-Box 360, though.

My PS3 happens to be of a lot more use to me than that of my Wii, because I use it for Blu-ray and video games as well as music and photos and all that jazz. I'm not saying the Wii is a bad console--it's actually quite unique, it's just that the PS3 is better.

Don't call me a Sony fanboy, though. I still play on my DS and Game Boy Color every day. Anyways, I'm a little excited for this, it looks very cool. Nintendo is kind of behind with the whole HD graphics thing, though.

Really? and not practical for you no offense

And, why do people say Nintendo is late to the the latest console waves? While those companies played catch-up for 4 years, Nintendo continued to innovate with the 3DS.

And honestly, if you want "hardcore" games, get out. Nintendo has some of the best games out there and just because you don't see games on it rated M for "Extreme Violence, Extreme Cursing, and Adult Content" doesn't mean they're not good/hardcore.

Not JUST them. All of the software developers (Capcom, Konami, Sega, Valve, NetherRealm Studios, etc.) present as well. Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft only present their own first-party consoles and games.
