Is scratch suitable for junior kids?

Hi, I've been asked to teach some apps to kids aged between 6-12 and wondered if Scratch might be suitable or are the concepts too tricky for this age group?

Although it was made for 6-12 year olds, knowing 6-12 year olds, very few will get past moving towards a mouse pointer. And that's if you're lucky.

Hey,  I'm only 7 and I'm very good at programming already, believe it or not.

Yeah, I am 14 too  big_smile . I started scratch in 2009 but even though I left for 15 months, I felt the urge to make projects again  big_smile . And anyway, there are adults on scratch like Paddle2See or Jens.

Re: Is scratch suitable for junior kids?

I teach 11-14 year-olds.  I was encouraged by high school Computer Science teachers to use Scratch with my students to teach them introductory programming skills and logic.

After about a week, my students are really excited, asking great questions, and having lots of fun!  I'd go for it!  It's all about how you introduce new ideas and your expectations for students.  They'll get past chasing the mouse - you may have to push a little - but they'll get past it.  smile

First of all, I said most.

Secondly, can I see an example of your stuff? Your stuff doesn't seem to prove much (understandable, a lot of people like remixing and stuff, but it doesn't really prove you're "very good at programming"), and I can't look through every project.

Re: Is scratch suitable for junior kids?

Scratch targets mostly 8-12 year olds, but any age above 6 could do it! It's a simpler type of programming.
