Variables are saved values that you can edit, etc. They're like reporters with a watcher, and blocks set what they report.

For a subsitute you can use 2 lists, e.g. Variable Names, and Values of Variables. With the lists shown, you see the values. Let's pretend the list Variable Names is called "1" and the other "2". Now on list 1, there is one item called "Variable". On list 2 there is another item called "0". To get the value of the variable, use block (item (number of value on list 2) of [2]).
