What exactly is the "export" feature used for. I tried exporting a costume to use in another project, but when I tried to open them in my other project, it didn't show up as an option, and I could only choose the preset costumes.
Am I doing this wrong, or is there a different way to transfer a sprite to another project? Thanks.

first choose the sprite you want to export then where you change the sprite name click "export sprite" then choose a folder to put it in then make the other project then just load it up! and if you have scripts for the sprite then when you load it just delete those scripts(unless you want to keep them)
oh and make sure you have the costumes you want too!

goldfish: it won't show up automatically because it was probably saved to a different file/area of your computer when you exported it. you probably just have to look through the other sections besides the Scratch costumes default when you try to reimport it. Hope that helps!

goldfish,
When I first started experimenting with scratch, I use to wonder the same thing. If you created a sprite and export that sprite, it will be saved as a scratch sprite file. Scratch sprite files can only be opened in scratch on the display screen. If you click the folder at the bottom of the display screen, you should be able to export your sprite back in. However, if you choose to paint a new sprite, and try to export your sprite in through the paint panel, it will not work.
I hope that was helpful.

I am getting a pink (fushia) background color on sprites I export. Is there a way to get a transparent background. Thanks.

Currently, SCRATCH exports images as .bmp files with a bright pink background. If you wish to have a transparent background, you'll need some kind of image editor that will allow you to erase the pink area and convert the file to .png while keeping the erased areas as intact transparent areas.

Thanks for both sets of messages, which meant there had to be a difference in what we were each doing so I tried several things.
I think
a. if you right-click on the costume (middle window) and you have a transparent background on the sprite - then when you export it the background turns pink because it exports it as a BMP (bitmap).
b. if you right-click on the sprite (bottom right window) - then when you export it, it exports all the costumes as GIFS so the background remains transparent. Of course you get all the costumes together with all the scripts and sounds, but this is okay as you can then import it and then click & drag the costume you want onto the sprite you want.

The underlined is what I do. Every once in awhile I don't and do it the other way, and it turns pink. YAY we found the cure!

You must export it in .png image in Scratch, not .bmg or .gif (Gif delete black background, .bmg add bright pink background. Then import by cilck import button in Scratch, find where you left the file of sprite or background. NOTE: GIF is only for InfanView, and animation.
