You want good writing? Try Dune, His Dark Materials, or Foundation. All are written excellently. Harry Potter has great plot and everything else but it's eloquence isn't quite as good as these.

I just recently read the Eyes of the dragon by Stephen King. Pretty Good. I also really like Harry Potter and the Bartimaeus Trilogy. One of my all-time favorite series is Gregor the Overlander. A series of unfortunate events was really great up until the ending, which left me so frustrated that I still didn't know about all the stuff.

bridge to teribithia
and i like a wrinkle in time but that wasn't exactly mentioned

Hm, I know you don't like suggestions, but how about The Dream Merchant by Isabel Hoving? It's a little slow but pretty good.
Ooh! Or if you like Harry Potter you could read Tunnels by Roderick Gordon and Brian Williams. It's also a tad slow in the beginning but it gets good, and it has Harry Potter's level of fantasy.
Ooh! Or City of Ember by Jeanne DuPrau! Also great, if you've seen the movie do not let that ruin it for you, the book is twenty times better.
(None of these have any attacks on or even really mention religion at all as far as I remember).

Oh yes, and I also like Chasing Vermeer and the sequels by Blue Balliet(t?).

EDIT: And I need help finding books. sad I pulled out EVERY book in the kids' section at my local library and I swear there were only 5 I hadn't already read or tried. I tried those and they were all bad.
I tried the teens section but couldn't find any good books that I'm actually allowed to read.

they're not that bad and this is also a dyslexic, add, kid we're talking about so i guess grammar /could/ be intentional. Plus a kid who's writing not for a project or anything probably wouldn't care too much. But I guess that's letting the author off easy.

and kileymeister: I like Harry Potter and everyone assumes they should shove Fantasy suggestion down my throat. I like more humor anyway. Some more modern series (you'll have a much better chance if i actually have heard about it) i like are: Maximum Ride, PJ series, HP series, BUT I have also read the Monk books (based on show), am reading Accidental Adventures which is more mythology and exploration than flat out fantasy.

And I REALLY want to read Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy but my dad has to reread it to see if it's bad. roll

Cirque Du Freak, a nice horror series. It also has relationships but they're more being true to friends and betrayal than Twilight love stuff. It's vampires but probably the best vampire writing ever.

it's a really good series.

it's first person of a vampire and talks about all the struggles. he gives up his life for his friend, but his friend just hates him for it. he leaves his family and can never see them again. if he finds a girlfriend, they'll grow up before he has reached the next year (age progression is 5 times slower). i'll stop there before i spoil it too much

Em, it has a certain chapter in it, well, just stick with the first three books. The book itself is great, there's just a chapter that isn't appropriate for all ages..
