VOTE FOR THIS!
Hey guys! Seeing as Scratch 2.0 is getting well underway, I offered to help with some UI design layout and graphic design ideas... Just wanted to ask your opinions on a layout idea I had:
Quick and sloppy, I know. But hopefully this is all I need to get the point across.
What are your ideas? How can the layout of Scratch's project editor be made better?
Oh, and every time you say "WEN WILL SCRACH 2.O B OUT??!!11" the release date gets pushed back another month.
Suggestions eh? Now nobody will look here.
Here is something much nicer looking, but It is completely empty:

Couldn't agree more -- the stage needs to be a much more prominent part of the UI. If I had it my way the entire UI would be the stage, with floating toolbars for scripts, sprites, etc. that could be moved, resized, and snapped to edges. But that's an awful lot of work, at least for 2.0!

I personally think the sprite selection should be always visible (or at least triggered by a mouse-over instead of a click) because I often switch sprites when working. It's also useful for the drag n drop script feature (assuming they'll keep it in 2.0).
The rest sounds really great. As far as I'm concerned, Scratch will turn out great as long as you follow your outline

Great idea!
The block palette will roll out when the mouse is over the scripting area, so the sprite selection will do the same as the mouse passes over the Sprite info box.

Do that with a draggable stage resizer!

It is already MUCH bigger than the current one.
This is at a standard 1024x768 resolution, keep in mind.

Scripting Area needs to be more prominent. I like the current one. Maybe a feature to toggle it?

An easy Screen resizer will most likely be added, so you can choose if the stage or the scripting area is larger.

I really prefer a nice, large scripting area. Think about it: you spend a lot more time and space on actually writing scripts for your project than positioning objects. It would be nice if the block palette could be a "pop-out" menu that would show when you mouse over it. Maybe if the different areas would resize depending on which one you're using, or something. That would be useful.

I honestly think this is an awesome idea.

The current design is cumbersome, unorganized, and inefficient. Change is coming, that I WILL guarantee you.

@everyone else:
Looks like the stage will be resizeable in my next design...

I agree...since we already have a full-screen view of the stage, it would be nice to be able to hide it completely for a little bit. I guess what this all boils down to is that more customization = better interface.

Lightnin mentioned that stage resizing would not work in the same way as it does now, but that is all I've heard.
Customizable user pages are almost certainly coming. Script and stage area resizing is a must, but is not essential for the initial release.

This thread was created so I could see what you all want, as well as come up with a general idea for the layout.
