Recently as of April 7th, 2011, it has been declared that if an agreement for the 2011 American budget plan is not reached by this Friday at midnight, there will be a national government shut down.
Here's a Government shutdown definition: "A government shutdown occurs when a legislature (including the legislative power of veto by the executive) cannot agree on financing its government programs for the next fiscal year. As the next fiscal year starts, the government stops providing services." -Webster Dictionary online definition.
In other words, this means when the congress (the people voting and proposing ideas) can't agree on a budget plan for the next year,
the government 'shuts down', no longer providing funding for public
services. The budget plan for this year involves cutting funding from
government funded services, but what the Democrats and Republicans can't agree on, in simplistic terms, is how much to cut and where to cut it from. The democrats want to cut $33 billion but the republicans want to cut $60 billion according to The Washington
Post. A compromise must be made.

Let's not have the government be like the NFL.
But it looks as if it has come to this.

Very true. I don't think America can afford MORE cuts. teachers are getting hit the hardest, too. Shame.

if we kill the unions, they won't be taking all of our money. [/sarcasm]
Seriously, I love it when people think that 10 billion dollars is too small.

If everyone helped to eliminate the national debt, every man woman and child would pay more than $40,000.

It's insane what American debt is. Why don't we just appoint Colbert and Stewart to co-president? They'd be beast. Lol, now I sound uber biased.

If you would like to know Australia's whole economy is because of China. If China stops buying then the economy would collapse. We will just have to think of other things to do with rocks and uranium.

We just had two riots: The TEA Party (oo-rah) and the Public Unions. A third isn't gonna hurt.

Not quite true - actually, we've been recovering from the economy quite quickly. Now, I'm not exactly in support of Harper's government, but his economic action plan seemed to work, although the aftereffects are obviously going to be quite drastic. Regardless, we're in the middle of an election, and Harper's government is either going to be replaced by Ignatieff's Liberals, or Harper will get a majority, or things will stay the same.
