Another forum I used to visit had a useful feature where you could simply hover your cursor of the title of a thread to view a preview of the main post, similar to hovering over an image and having that little yellow bar with a few words show up.

Could we possibly implement this feature on the forums?

The thing with Google is that it doesn't know what part of the website is the main part, so rather than getting a navigation menu, an image lets you get all the website. Also, a lot of people remember websites by what they look like, so having an image is also helpful there.

Anyhoo - this is a great suggestion. But is it really necessary? I think a thread title should be specific enough that you know what the thread's about, and it's not a huge deal to just press the "back" button.

Still, it'd be a great addition to the forums, despite the recoding it may entail.

It really shouldn't be that hard. Here's basically what I mean from a different forum I used to visit:

That forum had it so it would preview the entire post, but I guess a limit of like 5 - 8 lines would be fine.

This would be a great addition to the forums. A lot of people use very non-specific and generally non-related titles for their threads. Like in the picture Sunrise-Moon posted, it would only need to display a couple sentences of the first post when you mouse over the title.

It could work as long as it wouldn't take up too much server space, which could be a concern, as well as the time needed to implement it.

I don't think server space would be a problem, because it would just be retrieving text that's already in the thread. All you would need is the script. Time might be an issue though. hmm

It might make it harder to read. I'd prefer a plain text preview, but that's just me.

Actually, that'd probably work better as it would be nicer on the eyes and easier to program (just use an iFrame).
