i know this is a personal question, and there's not a "dog for every family," so I'm asking for your input and if you have a dog. My family's thinking of adopting/fostering a dog, and i'm not quite sure what i want. here are some generalizations on what kinda dog I'd lean torwards too
- Intelligent and semi-easy to train
- Athletic and energetic
- Doesn't drool (yeah sorry don't like that)
- Gets along with older children
- Social, but not "omg playwithme hahahahahaha"
- Not too big, size isn't a big issue.
- Don't care about the coloring, but should be sorta easy to groom and not too much shedding
Here are some dogs I've been looking at (links below)
The Vizsla
Pembroke/Cardigan Welsh Corgi
Australian Shepherd
i know not every dog has the same personality because of it's breed. heck, that's not necessarily true at all. I'm just looking for guidelines
and you know, there's always mutts c:

Speaking as the owner of one, English Springer Spaniels are usually energetic and quite smart. They're also really well behaved (except for the very rare case of "Springer Rage"). The only problem is they need quite a bit of attention, but not too too much.

Poodles are great! They don't shed, are playful, and are the smartest dogs I know.

Er, well I typically strongly dislike dogs, but I would choose:
Dachshund
Schnauzer
or maybe a Toy Poodle. Those are cute.
Idk. Just don't get a St Bernard, a Beagle, a Pug, a Chihuahua or a Great Dane. Those are my least favorites.

Ruffle is right, beagles are cool, but I don't know if you want one,so I suggest Border Collie or Australian Shepherd. Im not really a dog person, but my favorite breed is golden retrever bit i dont think it matches your needs.

Labrador, get a labrador.
They are kind, cute, intelligent, protective and easy to train.
Here's a pic of my labrador, Bella, waking up from a nap.

Aaaw.... thanks. You should see her when she begs.
Its impossible not to give her what she wants.

I have a Weimaraner, which is basically a bigger Vizsla, but it has larger ears and is silvery-bronze, and she is very boisterous. If anything, go for a Vizsla. Weimeraners and Vizslas are generalised as the cleverest of dogs, but can be quite active.
If you want the easy life then it's best to go with a simple Golden Retriever, or a Yellow Lab. They're the most friendly of all dogs.

Well, everyone's telling me now we need a fenced in yard
great, i'll never get a dog at this rate. my dad would not spend a cent for a fence, he already complains about any other expense and i could hardly convince him to get a hamster.
A HAMSTER.
are their any dogs that WON'T go suicidal if they don't have some stupid fence?

Well, maltipoos (continuing my previous post
) are the kind of dogs that will usually be in your lap, in your arms, and will most likely run around on the couch.
