I'm assuming you're debating between the iPhone and iPod Touch. It depends. How do you plan on using it? You should remember that the differences between the two are relatively minor, except that the iPhone has phone/data capabilities. If you think you'll use that, go for it. Just make sure you can afford the outrageous plan.

My iPhone is great.
It was used by my dad for a year or so, and given to me.
It doesn't have phone calling or edge or stuff, but it functions as an iTouch with a camera, basically.
No fees anymore.
And the iPhone is cheaper than the itouch, iThink.

On contract, it is actually $30 cheaper than the base model iTouch. But when you factor in the price of that contract, the iPhone ends up costing hundreds more.

Is it possible to cancel a contract after several months so you don't have to pay anymore?

By that you mean the oversized iPod touch. Take out the oversized part and it's the iPod touch. xD

Hey, even though it's just an oversized iPod Touch, it's still worth it. The extra screen real-estate can add a lot of depth to games/apps.

You can, but then you get slapped with a huge early termination fee.
