Rube Goldberg Machines

Have you ever made a Rube Goldberg Machine? Talk about them here.  smile

I made one with my brother and his friend. It was kind of short but it took a really long time to make. They put it on YouTube: http://www.scratch.mit.edu/ext/youtube/?v=_-ExQRhnmto

Re: Rube Goldberg Machines

It was an assignment for everyone to design one in my class in third grade.

We had to use certain items.

Mine pushed a napkin into one's lap.

That looks utterly fake.

1. tire don't go up hills.
2. Just look at the speakers.
3. Why would they do the whole thing INSIDE?

Well apparently it's real, but seriously.

Re: Rube Goldberg Machines

I once created a Rube Goldberg machine that would drop a pail of water on someone.

However, something jammed and the pail of water, plus the metal beams that hold it up, all fell on the person.

He escaped luckily.

Sounds dangerous.  smile  We had to run ours a ton of times before it finally worked all the way through...

Nope, it's 100% real. I'm not exactly sure how they got the tires to roll uphill, but it's something to do with them being hollow.

More like them being hollow and inserting a weight inside.

It's possible to make hollow wheels roll uphill by inserting a weight inside and positioning the wheel in a certain position. I've seen it done with empty tin can with weights taped on the inside of them. [Try it out one day, it's pretty cool!].  smile

Love that one!

I love the chain reaction if not so much the song. (Which I don't really pay attention to)

P.S. OK Go has a 3D video on 3DS. [/evenmoreof3ds]

I like how it fits with the song, and sometimes goes along to the music.

And yeah, OK Go are known for awesome music videos. Like that treadmill one, or the stop motion one.

A Rube Goldberg machine is a chain reaction that performs something simple in a complicated way. Here is the one we made. The purpose was to get a ping-pong ball in a cup, which is really simple, but we made into a bunch of steps:
1) Car rolls down track
2) Car falls in cup, causing it to fall.
3) String attached to cup knocks over a domino.
4) Chain reaction of dominoes.
5) Last domino knocks over block.
6) Pendulum is released by block and swings.
7) End of pendulum (another block) hits a standing CD case.
8) Chain reaction of falling CD cases.
9) Last CD case hits a yoyo.
10) Yoyo rolls down track.
11) Vibrations of track cause a cup  on a pivot to fall over.
12) Ping-pong ball from cup rolls down track.
13) Ball bounces of a block on the floor.
14) Ball bounces of panel.
15) Ball falls in the cup.

See? This could have been accomplished in only one step (place ping-pong ball in cup), but we made it much more complicated.
