Persuading Parents

I couldn't really think up of a good title for this so anyway.

I have recently developed an interest for mountainbiking, mainly downhill, and seeing as i have grown out of my old bike, I've decided to get a good mountain bike (Kona Coiler 2nd hand for €500). Unfortunately, my dad doesn't understand, and keeps dragging me around, Halfords and the like, he wants me to get a dirt cheap bike, he doesn't understand that quality is what i need, and he thinks that I'm an eight year old who wants a flashy shiny bike, which i don't, so i need help to convince him to give me the money for a proper bike.

Any Ideas?

Re: Persuading Parents

That sort of thing happened to me too. When I was looking for a copy of flash, my dad found a copy of MX studio for really cheap. But it had only actionscript 1.0, and I tried to convince him that it wasn't enough, and I wanted at least Flash 8, not because it looked cool, but because flash 8 had what I needed, and MX didn't. After a while, though, I found a really new CS4 version, and it was fairly cheap (About $180). Still, it took a good bit of conversation (Not arguing, that will get you nowhere) to convince him.

Back. For now. Maybe.

Re: Persuading Parents

How much are you willing to split the cost? I just bought a bike (Over $1000). I payed 75% and my mum payed the rest. Offer to pay more to get a better bike.

Find someone post count. Click posts under username. Find number of pages. Times that by 40 for min and 60 for max and you have a rough estimate of post count.

Re: Persuading Parents

Learn the ABCs of Dealing with Parents:Argue, Beg and Cry.

Once you've mastered the basics, you can try more advance techniques like:

Insistence(for those with stamina)
Whining(some stamina required, plus delicate balancing of the amount of whining)
Temper Tantrum(either you're born with it or you're not)
Sulk(for those with very high stamina, and with low stamina parents)
Logical Debate(a difficult variation of arguing)
Bribe(if you're rich, offer to pay a portion of the cost)

And in a last resort...

SOASTYPDLYND(Storm off and scream that your parents don't love you, nobody does)
A lot of rookies overuse this until it becomes obsolete and something that their parents are steeled for anyway. Use it sparingly so they never know when it's coming and will give in under the sudden pressure.

My advice: Don't follow this advice

Good!

I have, insistence, logical debate and SOASTYPDLYND skills.

Problem is, so do my parents.

@Cnor.
You're 8?

Well if you wanted honesty, that's all you had to say. I never want to let you down or have you go, it's better off this way.

You're 8?

That was disturbing. I'm trying to imagine...

Insistence
You:I want it! I want it! I want it!
Parents:You can't have it! You can't have it! You can't have it!

Logical Debate
You:Therefore, this would be fundamental to my daily life, and as you can see from here, it would pay itself off in two weeks, assuming you include travel costs...
Parents:But when you factor in maintenance and time costs, you would jump from two to six weeks...

SOASTYPDLYND
You:*SOASTYPDLYND*
Parents*SOASTYPDLYND*
