Re: The Word "Emo"

It seems you misinterpreted what I said
Art school as in musical, or drama, or visual arts. Besides, that was a joke, being artistic has nothing to do with being 'emotional' but now your words are put in a way as though that you think it is fact. As I've mentioned before, your knowledge of the word emo is just a basic understanding of the stereotypical emo person. The origin of the word emo comes emotive music, and nothing else, but today's society has warped the meaning into whatever you're thinking of. Not that I have any problem with that, my problem is with you acting like you're an expert on them.

And I believe the term you were looking for is Sociology, not Socialology

Re: The Word "Emo"

I'm not an expert on emos! I'm just sharing what I have been taught by the emos I know! It's not like I typed all of that first post, I copy & pasted some from a report my emo friend wrote and saved on my laptop. So not all of that stuff is MY opinion, it is my friend's. Well, some of it.
And I'm guessing you don't know any emos personally. They're nice, a bit weird; but nice. Uber-emotional though, they think it's 'creative' to write sad poems on their hands.
But yeah, my knowledge is backed up by that report thing my friend wrote for English - she has a deeper knowledge and has a whole bunch of creepy emo kid friends.
No hard feelings.

Re: The Word "Emo"

No hard feelings about what?
Having a few friends who self mutilate and hate themselves does not make that person an expert either. Perhaps you shouldn't copy and paste some random report that doesn't have to do with the subject. I hate to tell you this, but we've been off topic for the whole conversation. I've said this already, but this topic isn't about emotional people, it's about music.

Re: The Word "Emo"

Emo: A shortened version of 'emotional'. An emo is someone who is depressed or constantly depressing to the world. They either hate themselves or hate you. Mild emos are more political, moaning forever about the government in power (bit like me, really XD). Extreme emos (which trust me - there are very few of them, thank the lord) say they want to kill themselves, and threaten to slit their wrists/strangle themselves/stab themselves. Really - emos are dying out (the emo fad, not emos themselves), so I guess it really isn't that bad to stereotype it if you don't mean it seriously.

One thing I do hate is when people claim they are hardcore emos when really, they are just trying to impress people. How impressed I would be if someone did that.

I think you're a bit confused, tomicool. We're supposed to be talking about emotive music, not whatever you just posted. What does a hardcore emo even do? You didn't mention anything

Re: The Word "Emo"

There is a SERIOUS sterotype for the emos.
People call me emo because I listen to punk rock and have long floppy hair. I think the fact that I have pale skin adds points too.

Isn't it obvious? Something that is just depressing, so much so it could make a happy person cry. I dunno, that's just my views.

If people are gonna call it that, they're gonna call it that.

If you like it listen to it, don't worry about being labeled.

Not all people that cut themselves are "emo".

There's a guy at my school who stapled his hand.

He's not "emo", or as far as I know he isn't.

Exactly.

There is a subculture associated with it, but it's just the skinny jeans/black hair thing. The cutting yourself thing is more goth.

That sounds more like metalcore then emotive hardcore.

BTW, in my original post I miscalculated some facts about the genre. I'll make it more accurate. Emo is a subgenre of hardcore punk, originating in the 80's with bands like Rites Of Spring. However, in the early 90's when bands like Taking Back Sunday came out, and weren't emo, but claimed to be influenced by emo bands, therefore were considered emo, when they were more alternative/indie rock. Then in the mid-90's bands like Weezer and Jimmy Eat World came out and were influenced by Sunny Day Real Estate. Since SDRE were considered emo, Weezer and Jimmy Eat World were automatically considered emo, even though they had no hardcore influences at all. And every alternative rock band that came after that and had emotional lyrics was lumped in with emo, no matter how little they had to do with the original genre.

Unfortunately, I'm not making this up. Many music journalists label them as an emo band.

The All-American Rejects are an emo band and they're my favorite band. Their music is great and I'm not a very negative person anyway. I would delve into your emo-musicology more...

All American Rejects is far from emo. They are a pop-rock band.

As I said, emo stands for "emotive hardcore". AAR is not hardcore (and if you really think that, you need to get your hearing checked), therefore not emo.
