Does anybody know what this word means anymore? The definition is so jaded, that I have to explain it over and over.
[link removed by Moderator - Please make sure your links are age appropriate]Emo is a subgenre of hardcore punk. Bands included Taking Back Sunday and Sunny Day Real Estate.
Despite this, I always here this:
"Those guys are so emo"
"That is so emo"
What they are really saying is:
"Those guys are so a subgenre of hardcore punk"
"That is so a subgenre of hardcore punk"
Seriously, why can't people do their research and stop sterotyping people.
Your opinions on this? Or bands to add to my list below?
BANDS THAT AREN'T EMO, DESPITE THE FACT THAT THEY ARE COMMINLY LABELED EMO
My Chemical Romance (Alt rock)
Fall Out Boy (Pop rock)
Jimmy Eat World (Alt rock/Power pop)
Weezer (Alt rock/Power pop)
Panic! At The Disco (Pop-punk)
Green Day (Punk rock/Pop-punk)
Three Days Grace (Hard rock/Alt rock)
Cute Is What We Aim For (Alt rock/Power pop)

Emo is also emotional
"That's so emo" can also be those goth kids with black hair that hides their face and that isn't long. They're usually mean and don't like to have fun
I hate emos (no offense)

That's like saying "I hate women (no sexism intended)".
It's not on the same level, but it's the same idea.
Women aren't emo >.>
Well, actually, only those crazy married women

I don't think he meant woman are emo.

Completely different usage. If you call someone emo it means they're emotionally unstable. Not a subgenera of punk.
Yes, it's usually that. Emo is actually an urban culture (or whatever they're called, I hate them anyway) and the subgenre of hardcore punk is named after it.

I would not call panic at the disco 'emo'
I never said they were. In fact, I said the exact opposite.
They are often labeled that, so I wanted to clear up that they are pop-punk, not emo.
@technoguyx: I think the culture was named after the music, not the other way around.

I was just saying that I know they are often labeled that, so I wanted to clear up that I am not the person who says the are emo.

Not only is it obvious that P@TD isn't emo to anybody who actually knows the genre, Brendon Urie actually said that they were completely opposed to them being labeled it.
I'd link to the interview, but he said some dirty words.

I am not one for stereotypes. It's not right to box people into a certain group or category judged on what they look or act like. I would go on but it would become 'religious'...

Emo means a music genre and is also short for 'emotional'; people can be labelled as emo. It's just like being called a goth, chav, scene kid, and all the rest.
I get mistaken for an emo a lot. I fit the criteria for people's Emo Radar. I wear lots of eyeliner and mascara. I have very fair skin and my dark hair makes me look gothic. I tend to shuffle around with my hands in my hoody pockets, though I can be extroverted when I want to be. I know real emos, they're good people, just little cold-hearted. They are proud of being emo, but don't go round screaming about their social label. Okay, you know that 'Welcome to the Black Parade' song by My Chemical Romance? Emos believe that when they die hat is where they will go - the Black Parade, a heaven for Emos.
Despite popular belief, true emos don't flaunt dyed black hair with long bangs and they don't wear tight black clothing and a tub-and-a-half of Boots eyeliner on their eyes and halfway down their face too. They don't lock themselves in their room, powder their faces white and wail about the could-have-beens, the lost-loves, and the unfulfilled dreams. They don't lose themselves while listening to Good Charlotte and My Chemical Romance. Most emos are just misunderstood, and no true emo follows these guidelines set out to them. They go with what they want.
As people say, goths are different to emos. Emos kid themselves that they are happy with life, though they are infamous for self-harming. Goths want to kill others, emos want to kill themselves.Goths hate others, emos hate themselves.
Any questions?

Where do you get your information?

I know a few true emos personally. And the other stuff is popular belief, though true emos (like my friends, they don't run round screaming 'I'M AN EMO LOLOLOOL') never listen to that kind of music and not all self harm - though my friend Kiera did.

You really believe those idiots at the Daily Mail?
The Black Parade is a rock opera by My Chemical Romance. It is about a character who is dying from cancer. Not emo heaven.

That's the point. They are not true emos
You see, this debate is about the origin of the word emo. Technically sanddude is right, emo originated as an insult to the people who like emotive music, that sub-genre of punk.

I know the song, duh! And the Daily Mail, lolwut? My emo friends (they are actually emos, they quielty admitted it to me, they all self-harm and hate themselves) believe all the Black Parade stuff. I think they're a bit shallow, but each to their own, I suppose. I'm pretty unbiased on this stuff.

'My friend bob' does not really count as a credible source
I know like 5 emos in my year, and a kid in Year 10. I talk to her about this stuff, and she has lots of creepy emo friends. She tells me about all her emo stories. And also, considering I know an adult studying socialology and social labels at uni, I believe I have credible sources.
I assume you don't personally know any emos, Blade?

Are you kidding? I go to an arts school
However, your definition of emo is wrong, that's the main argument here.
Since you so happen to know a socialology major? whatever that is, you should tell them not to teach you to label and stereotype people, especially when they're adults

Tell them that MCR wants punk fans, not emo fans.

They research the psychology behind cliques and stereotypes, and do surveys and such. And yeah, seems like a pointless degree, but she's a bit stupid at choosing courses anyway
Like I said, it can mean the music genre, or in some cases, a person.
BTW - Some emos can be quite arty, Kiera is very artistic.
@sanddude - I actually DID! She told me MCR need all the fans they can get.
