Violence in Video Games

I personally think that violence in video games isn't a problem.  It's no big deal!  I did some research, and found that it was only common sense.
Many violent kids play violent video games, but that doesn't mean that the video games cause their bad behavior.  It's likely that violent kids are just more attracted to these games.
Most school shooters are video gamers.  Well they also sit in chairs, drink water, and eat food.  So what?
I play mature games myself, and I wouldn't dream of harming someone!  The games I play don't change the person I am.

What are your opinions on the topic?

Re: Violence in Video Games

I think all this talk about "OMG you like Black Ops and you're, like, the school bully ZOMG CONNECTION!!!11!!11!oneone!!" is a lot of bull[removed]. Sure, there is SOME kind of connection; mean or violent kids like violent games, but the games aren't what causes this type of behaviour(british sp FTW), but infact it's the other way around. Their behaviour leads them to violent games like Black Ops. I like the Halo series, yet I wouldn't dream of hurting a fly! Much less shooting one... O_o.

Tl;dr, I agree.

Re: Violence in Video Games

Well, I have little opinion on the matter, as I tend to steer clear of video-games with blood and gore. I don't like those games, they just- gah! Freaks me out.

Re: Violence in Video Games

I'm not allowed to play violent video games (not that I'd want to) because I'm a Jehovah's Witness.

Re: Violence in Video Games

Video games in general excite you and make you somewhat more violent, but other than violent games not being suitable for small children (because they teach them violence), to older 12+ people it's fine.

Re: Violence in Video Games

I absolutely agree. If a parent is worried about that, then it's because they can't talk and rationalize with their kids, so they hide then from a little thing called the real world.

I wouldn't want my kids playing that and getting traumatized when Isaac is cut in half by a door and bleeding everywhere

Re: Violence in Video Games

IDC, really. If people are playing the violent games well underage, then it's the parents fault.

I might return for a little while.

Agreed also. I don't think playing violent games makes you violent, but I do think you should be responsible.

You as in the player, or the people who made the game?

Re: Violence in Video Games

Anyone who blames violence on only videogames is stupid, or has some other reason to hate videogames.

Yes. Well, I only specifically know of a study on violent tv shows, but still...

Re: Violence in Video Games

There will be violence in the world with or without videogames. That's just how it works.

Well, yes. Of course. We weren't suggesting that all the violence in the world is just because of violent video games.  tongue

I see your point. However, there are also studies contradicting this. Also, for certain players it could be a way to release violent emotions in a non-harmful way.

Wouldn't it be nice if people could provide a link to these amazing studies?

Re: Violence in Video Games

Now you're going to say that I haven't either. True, but that's because I read it in a book about behavioral science. But I can give you the name of the person who did it: Paul Ekman.

I would but it was in a book.

The book was called "Don't Bother Me Mom-I'm Learning" by Marc Prensky. It's about the positive effects video games have on kids, both violent and non-violent games included.
