OK. I'm back... for now. Let's get this show on the road!
Nice game TheSaint. But it's given me so much frustration that I don't want to love-it.

I really like physics puzzlers. And they're usually popular.
What about a Scratch remake of Angry Birds? It'd be difficult, but I think we could pull it off.

I think we should create our own idea instead of taking an existing one... and Angry Birds looks way too hard
..........
We (everyone in the collab) seem to have mixed ideas on what type of project to make... I think we should all put what we want into a list.
Teh list:
TheSaint:
Chrischb:
Jonathanpb:
Puzzle, with a slight battle twist to it.
Soupoftomato:
PlayWithFire:
ProgrammingFreak:
Shadow:
BTW, you should update the topic post TheSaint

Alternatively a tower defense game wouldn't be too bad, though TheSaint already has one (I think).

I'm really sorry about saying that now.
And, I want either platformer or puzzle.
Ok, it's fine Tell me if you ever need help.

Puzzle, with a slight battle twist to it.
RPG stylish type too.

Is there anyway we can incorporate all three of those ideas into an original concept? A physics puzzler platformer RPG sounds pretty cool.

So like platformer and physics would mix well, easy.
Then we add in a leveling and puzzle-fighting game.

OK, so here's what I think should happen.
Let's have a physics platformer centered around gravity. This makes for a really cool gaming experience. Imagine a circular stage, with a large body mass in the center. There could than be a circular motion around the mass, kind of like in Archmage's Super Mario Galaxy. However, I think we can easily make the physics and universe our own (we DON'T need to copy, we can keep our game-play original).
We would need to incorporate a really strong story (as usual). And I'm not talking about simply rescuing a princess. Depending on the length and complexity of our game, we'll need to add a stronger plot.
A fighting aspect can easily be incorporated; that shouldn't be an issue.
HOWEVER a tile based system will be difficult to include. I'll keep thinking though.

OK, a minute after my last post I had an idea. This could be going in a completely different direction from what we want our game to be, but this is something to build off of anyway.
We all agree that we want to keep our games medieval. Has anyone EVER combined a medieval AND space environment in a game? It sounds both scary and brilliant to me.
Imagine a turn-based fighting system, in which opponents take turns using a various inventory of weapons to destroy an enemy's castle on another planet. Has anyone every played the game Worms? Think of a fighting style similar to that.
The brilliant part is, we keep the same old medieval weapons that are in Dragon Defense! It would be a confusing but enormously fun element to have!
One thing that I think was missing from Dragon Defense is extended game-play. It's pretty much over after a few minutes, and their really wasn't a desire in me to play again (I hope that isn't taken as an insult, only constructive criticism). The one way I can think of changing this is a powerful AI. This would ensure a different game every time, even if the game is won quickly.
So, thoughts?

^ building on that we should definitely do different planets, with different gravity, changing the gameplay experience
Offline
Shadow, that idea PWNZ!!!
Could we have some puzzles though? :3
Just a thought - we shouldn't be too ambitious, or we'll never get it done.
Offline
*smacks forehead* GAH! I forgot about puzzles! Well those can easily be incorporated into any game if you don't mind the puzzle aspect not being the spotlight... Hmm... What about a puzzle at the center of some planets that prevent you from reaching the planet. Solving them could give you an important shortcut or something like that.
Oh! It could be unblock/rush hour style! You know, when you have to slide objects in different directions to make a path to the goal.
And I'm glad you two like the idea! Still we need approval from everyone else before we can call this our project.
Offline
I don't like the planet idea, but something similar to Rush Hour sounds good.
What if you were digging for diamonds or gold in medieval times and you had to clear out the rubble and get the diamond out? Like, the pieces of rubble would be the other cars, and the diamond would be the car needing out.
Offline
Great ideas, all of them. Pick one, develop it into a story, and we will take it from there.
Offline
I don't like mixing Medieval and space together. Their two of my favorite styles and would be too different mixed.

Huh. 2 versus 2. This could get interesting.

STORY:
For innocent humans inhabiting the planet Medivulases (med-I-vul-las-es) life is all good and well. For most. You are an orphan. You're parents died in combat against an ancient creature inhabiting the planet (the Dragon). Medivulases was at war against the Dragon, and only through enormous amounts of bravery and sacrifice was victory achieved.* Your parents were among the death toll.
You life with a group of 100 boys, all orphaned by the war. The difference between them and you? You have AMBITION. And when someone is different, they tend to be picked on.
*It almost sounds a little bit like Dragon Defense, doesn't it?
Eventually, you've had enough. You apply for transfer to another orphanage, but the only place accepting is an organization called the COED (Corps of extraterrestrial defense). Figuring things can hardly get worse, you apply. You are accepted. You pack your meager belongings, and head to start a new life.
When you first arrive at the dismal building that you believe to be your new home, you look around quietly for human life. Rats scurry, but there isn't a soul to be found. And suddenly, the ground opens beneath you.
You land lightly, which is surprising after a ten second fall. You are in a dungeon. A man stands beside you, quietly observing you. Standing in front of you is... a dragon! It roars and you grab a sword nearby (tutorial begins).
The tutorial ends when you finally defeat the dragon. You go in for the kill... but hesitate. It really is no more than an infant, battered and bruised. You close your eyes and concentrate, trying to make the final blow, but none comes. The man next to you raises his eyebrows. A minute is spent there, with the dragon panting heavily. He then speaks for the first time. His voice is deep and strong, and he seems to shout when he says, "Well?". You look at the ground, embarrassed, and say, "I'm sorry Mr-sir-. I can't kill it." The man gives you a long searching gaze and then turns away. "Congratulations [name], you've been accepted into COED." He walks away and calls for a boy, about your age. He says with a broad grin, "Welcome. I'll give you a tour around headquarters." You smile back but frown inwardly, not expecting much. You push through two sets of double doors and leave the dugeons. You find yourself in a GIGANTIC room, elegant and magnificent. Men and boys of all ages stream about. You are then escorted to your dorm. A simple queen bed dominates the room, with a dresser and nightstand on either side. The boy says to you, "It isn't much, but this is our home." For the first time in a very long time, you let your features lift into a huge grin.
10 years later
You are the leading COED tactician and head the COED strategic department. You are at work in your office, looking at some files when the door opens and a messenger calls out, "[Name] your presence is requested at the Center." You are led to the main office and conference area, inhabited by only the most prestigious COED members. Inside there are many serious faces, all appearing grim. "Sit down," one calls. You recognize him as the person who first examined your training, whom you know now as the Commander-in-Chief of COED. He is something of a mentor and role model to you.
You take a seat. The general says, "Well, I'm going to be rather blunt in this talk and will not try to sugar coat it. Here's what's happening. We recently received reports about an offensive movement on a foreign planet. Normally as you all know, these are false alarms. However, I felt obliged to investigate, as ignorance compromises everyone's safety. To my surprise I discovered a castle and an army, ready for war, ten fold the size of our own. The beings there are all some sort of reptile. That is as much as we know- except... they seem to answer to a being called the Dragon.
A silence prevails the room. It seems to be louder than words.
"General [your name]!" You start slightly. "You will be heading the defensive movement against them. Meeting adjourned."
As the other people in the room begin whispering and muttering and turning away, the Commander pulls you aside. "Do you remember your first day on the job, where you fought the infant dragon." You nod, trying to discover where this is going. "Have you ever wondered why we accepted you into COED, even when you hesitated to kill the dragon?" You nod again. "I believe that mercy is a strength NOT a weakness. But now that, no matter how good it is, your enemies will never show you the same mercy that you give them. Keep that in mind. The moment you forget it is the moment that all is lost." You gulp, nod and turn away. "And general," the Commander calls, "I'm proud of you."
[Battles begin, with a few more explanations]
You slowly penetrate the enemies fortress, even with their numbers being far superior to your own. Eventually you reach the dragon. It's a tough battle, but eventually you overpower him. You begin to deliver the final blow, but hesitate. This decision will haunt your for the rest of your life. You flash back to your initial training. You think back to the Commander's words. And suddenly, you know what is right. You turn and walk away. The Dragon remains where he is. It approaches you slowly. You turn around, sword at the ready. The Dragon raises its snout and sniffs you. You pat it slowly. There is a mutual understanding between the two of you. You begin to heal his wounds.
THE END.
It's a complicated story, I know. But I think it is a good one. Remember that this is still in medieval times. So even if the story doesn't sound medieval, the fighting and graphics and style will all be like that.

Thanks. Actually, it kind of just came together quickly, the way archetypal stories sometimes do.

IMHO, the rush hour puzzle should happen when you want to access certain planets that would give you an advantage in a battle.
soupoftomato wrote:

I suppose all dragons and not aliens makes sense. I just don't want to limit COED to JUST dragons (that's why there is extraterrestrial in the name).
Notice how this game is kind of a continuation of the first. I also set up a threequel at the end (if we still want to do another project after this one).
Of course, one there IS one thing I want to make sure is OK. Jonathan and Chris, this is going to require a lot of graphics and cut-scenes. Are you comfortable with creating and animating those? If not, we should find someone willing to animate for the team or find a new story.
Lastly, I apologize for the typos. I'm on vacation in New Zealand ( ) right now and we went snorkeling today. We left before I could review the story, but I decided to submit it anyway.

Ooh... uh, after we plan out the project we can think about the graphics It's a bit early to decide now...
This is going to be like a turn-based RPG, right? If so, will we have equips? Those will take a lot of good graphics

So for the fighting style, think m44's Mutiny for inspiration. Again, it won't be copying. We'll be making it our own through the way we execute the concept, among other things.
