I am making a ship game called starboard. it is set in 1755. You are the captain of a ship, and you must fight other ships, win, upgrade your ship, and win more as the fights with other ships get tougher and tougher.
I have decided to make it a scrolling game RPG game, but there are a few questions I want to ask the public
-when you die, do you want to game to end completely, or do you just want to lose gold?
-should the soundtrack be the most awesome one I can find, or should it be related to the theme?
-Is there any drawbacks to scrolling?

Have you seen the game Pirates? It might give you some ideas. Also Paddle2See has some great sailing projects you might look at or remix as well (http://scratch.mit.edu/projects/Paddle2See/137150)
Maybe when you lose your ship you could get stranded in a row boat, and there might be a chance that you find an island or get picked up by a passing ship.

I love sailing games! I'm looking forward to seeing yours. Here is my scrolling sailing game - feel free to remix or use any parts of it you want. It used to work pretty well online but it seems pretty pokey since the java player got revised. Best to download.

JSO has a sailing game with some sprites you might be able to use

The drawbacks to scrolling are that it makes the scripts more complicated and things can get a bit laggy, moving all those sprites around.
