Creepy Subliminal Message in Portal

WARNING: There is some speculation in here

How many of you remember the final battle against GLaDOS? It's an interesting concept dropping the personality cores into the incinerator, no? There's actually a subliminal message in between the lines of all this. Let's recap:

Morality Core: The purple core that never talks. It seems to have a cold stare that stares into your soul almost.

Curiosity Core: The extremely happy yellow core. It contains a jolly personality and an unquenchable curiousness.

Logic Core: The somewhat obsessive blue core. It's currently preoccupied with the recipe for a delicious cake.

Anger Core: The rabid red core. It's actually the emotion core, but it's preoccupied with anger at the moment.

What do they all have in common? They're all pieces of GLaDOS's soul. If you've studied up on Portal history (or if you've played Portal: Prelude), you should know that they installed the Morality Core to stop GLaDOS from killing everyone with a neurotoxin, but it was too late. When Chell finally reached GLaDOS, she was about to unleash her "surprise", but one of the cores falls off. It was the morality core. GLaDOS told her to stuff it back into her, but Chell never listened. She instead threw it into an incinerator, possibly to have revenge against GLaDOS for the Companion Cube getting thrown into an incinerator earlier. The destruction of the core caused GLaDOS to loose any good in her. GLaDOS then started up the neurotoxin again to kill Chell outright. Chell, however, found ways to rip off the other cores and threw them into the incinerator. All of the damage caused a portal malfunction that transported Chell outside.

But there's just something all wrong with this. It almost seems as if GLaDOS WANTED Chell to burn the morality core. That's where this get's strange. GLaDOS wanted to find the perfect test subject to help her reach her ultimate desires. The perfect subject would pass all of the tests, which Chell did. The Companion Cube was designed to mess with people's sanity, but Chell put the Companion Cube in faster than any other recorded subject. GLaDOS then put Chell in the incinerator, to see if she could get out. She did, and made it her mission to kill GLaDOS. She finally reached GLaDOS, just as planned. GLaDOS dropped the Morality Core on purpose, claiming it was not intended. Chell then threw it into the incinerator out of revenge, causing GLaDOS to lose her good. But why? Simple. GLaDOS needed someone to destroy her soul. First it was the Morality Core, which caused GLaDOS to lose her good side. Then it was the Curiosity Core, which got rid of GLaDOS's need to keep Chell alive. Without the Logic Core, GLaDOS wouldn't need to rationalize her killings. And when the Anger Core, actually, the Emotion Core, as it should be called, was incinerated, there was no emotion to obstruct GLaDOS's work. GLaDOS was now the perfect killing machine. When GLaDOS was nearly destroyed and went into a sleeping mode, the other cores activated, in order to uphold the facility, waiting for someone to reactivate GLaDOS. After 100 years, Chell, who was also preserved, was awakened. Chell accidentally also awakened GLaDOS from her hibernation, ready to kill all who stood in her way. But there's something else. Remember the Borealis? Eli Vance said that whatever was on that ship must be destroyed at any cost. What was on that ship? Well, in the Portal TFV mappack, we can see cranes hauling crates filled with cores onto a ship: The Borealis.

Speculation ends here

Re: Creepy Subliminal Message in Portal

I always thought that was the whole point, not a secret message.  It's not really subliminal at all.  At least the first part about the morality cores.

She even says "Do you think I'm trying to trick you with reverse psychology?  No chance."

But did Valve ever think of the perfect killing machine part? Not to mention, this if for the people who don't know.  tongue

Hm.

That's a pretty interesting theory. However, like Kileymeister said, it was probably the whole point of it, but still, I can consider it a creepypasta--it might belong in the category "Subliminal Theories" or something like that, alongside the Ash In A Coma one about the Pokemon anime.

Yeah, you're right. It's more of a "subliminal theory".

Re: Creepy Subliminal Message in Portal

What seems to make your theory a little more likely is all the other "test subjects" we see along the way who died trying to escape, or holed up somewhere behind a wall. Why does GLaDOS seems so surprised at your escape from the incinerator if so many other people had managed to do so as well? It almost seems, as you said, that she's just waiting for someone to succeed and get to her. Of course, that takes the fun out of listening to her beg you to "assume the party escort submission position."  tongue

Not to mention, in the Portal TFV mappack, there's a secret area containing tubes with people that look exactly like Chell, and are said to be Chell clones. This means Abby from Portal: Prelude is another Chell. Or, to be more precise, Chell is another Abby. GLaDOS DID say that she had Chell's brain permenately backed up and scanned. DUN DUN DUUUUNNNN

OOOOOOOHHHHHHHHH. Yeah, and in my opinion, I wasn't very convinced that GLaDOS didn't know what that personality core did. Why did she suddenly remember its purpose after it was incinerated? Also rather convenient that the rocket turret turned off when you knocked a core off and reactivated after you incinerated it. Not to mention there was only one.

P.S. What is Portal: Prelude?

Portal: Prelude is a fanmade Portal game that tells the events of what happened before Portal. It's really hard! Try searching for it, along with the Portal TFV mappack.

Ah, thanks. Hopefully it will be a challenge. The regular campaign is a little too easy.  hmm

Oh, it's hard. There's even a badger badger badger easter egg hidden in one of the maps.  big_smile

Re: Creepy Subliminal Message in Portal

Different Theory:

GLaDOS has twisted programming. But she was orginally created to help with the testing, and no matter how twisted the code becomes, the intention remains. So she helps with the testing, but she makes it extraordinarily hard. Of course, she can't outright kill the subjects, because that would defeat the purpose of the programming, and all computers, even insane ones, have to adhere to that. She can, however, trick the subjects into situations where they might die, such as altering the last test such that Chell will go into the incinerator. When Chell gets to her, she intentionally drops the morality core in an attempt to trick Chell into burning it. Not sure if the Companion Cube was part of this elaborate plan. Anyway, when Chell burns it, she is now free of the programming that originally stops her from killing Chell. So she wrecks havoc. Chell stops GLaDOS by using portals, and all her cores fall off.

That's what it is, at first glance.

But GLaDOS was smart enough to recgonize Chell's portal tactics. So why didn't she stop Chell? My theory is that she was hoping for Chell to destroy her. As mentioned already, the Borealis has crates of cores. Crates. GLaDOS was dangerous with 4 cores. Imagine hundreds of them. That would be pure power.

So it all boils down to-GLaDOS tries to eliminate Chell like she would any other normal subject, but after a while, she realizes this won't work and switches tactics, trying to lure Chell into a situation where the cores would be inserted into GLaDOS, and she would get a lot of power. But somehow, with the mutilation of the Emotion Core perhaps, GLaDOS changed her mind again. She wants power still, but not for her own advantage. She is obsessesed with killing Chell, and those cores might just do the job.

They're only dangerous when connected to GLaDOS. Otherwise, they're quite adorable.  tongue

I dunno, the emotion one when disconnected was still too evil for me.

Personally, this is a little too far-fetched for me. What about everyone else who almost made it? They got close.
