It would work actually.  The reason you can't connect on most servers, is that the setting is on, so it checks the mc website to see whether you have actually paid for the game.  If it is off, it won't check.

I've only tried connecting to Sunrise-Moon's, so maybe it was down at that moment. 

Yeah, it was down right now, don't know about earlier though.  But yeah, it should work.
