Should I try moving to Ubuntu?

I've been having some thoughts about replacing the main OS on my laptop with Ubuntu, and move ALL of my files to Linux, as well as installing Windows in a Virtual Machine. To me, I think Ubuntu is pretty fast, and I could live with it being my main OS.

I'll atleast have Windows in a VM.

If you don't mind the uncompatibility with more than half the programs go ahead. I'd do it too but I do mind that. D:

What do you mean? Linux as the main OS, Windows in a Virtual Machine!

But VMs tend to run slow... Maybe my computer is just too lame for VMs though.  tongue

Re: Should I try moving to Ubuntu?

Totally. That's what I'm running right now. Although mine is dualboot...

SO I have Windows in a Partition and Ubuntu in another, Ubuntu is set as default operating system.

I don't see any problems with Linux. It's fast, and it has more apps that you thought. You can find almost any alternative to a Windows App, and if not, there is a Linux version that is probably better.

In conclusion, dual-boot instead of installing as main and VM. Linux sometimes goes crazy, and you need to boot into windows to fix it.  wink

Good luck buddy, I'll post some screens of my ubuntu, that I use all the time, later.

Hai.

I prefer VM over dualboot because I don't want to always have to restart to use something in Windows.

Does anyone know what I can do to move a Windows install to a VirtualBox virtual harddisk? Not VMware.

Re: Should I try moving to Ubuntu?

I have to agree with fg123. Install Ubuntu as a dual-boot alongside Windows. Windows will always be there if you need it, but trust me, you won't be missing the broader range of applications available for Windows nearly as much as you think.

Do you mean take copying all your windows files you currently have to your Vdisk?
I don't think it'll be easy, but I never tried. There's probably some software out there which'll pack it for you. The problem is the registry files, as those are completely locked from viewing, editing, opening, saving, etc!

You could use a disk cloning software like Acronis True Image to copy your Windows partition to a new VBox partition.

Re: Should I try moving to Ubuntu?

I highly suggest against Ubuntu. I don't really like. You have to have emulators for almost everything making it slow...

I'm one step closer to making it my main OS. Currently it is dualboot but I'll want to move later. I'm gonna get VirtualBox.

Will I be running Windows Emulators all the time? No.
